• The Westboro High School six-man football season will open on the Westboro field Friday night, September 16, with a game against Clearfield, Iowa. A squad of 27 members has reported to Coach Nick Gerhardt. The boys will have new suits in orange and black colors.

• A total of 474 students, the largest public school enrollment since 1942, has registered for the 1949-50 school year at Tarkio. The senior class has the most students with 47. The first grade has the most students on the elementary side with 41.

• The Mary Hammer murder case in Gentry County, including the participation in its investigation by Trooper L.E. Thompson of Tarkio, is featured in the October issue of “Crime Detective,” a magazine of true police stories. Seven people have been arrested in the case, which involved the murder of the 81-year-old recluse in her barn and thousands of dollars of currency and coins taken from her home.

• Raymond J. Gordon, who is making a 2,400-mile trip by horseback on his dapple grey English jumper English Dan, stopped in Tarkio Saturday. Mr. Gordon, president of the San Pedro Valley Riding Club of Benson, Arizona, is riding horseback from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Benson. On the last part of the journey, he will meet the replica of the historic old Modoc stagecoach at the famous Crystal Palace in Tombstone, Arizona, and ride as guard to Skov’s Dude Ranch.

• Don’s Tavern is advertising that it will be open for business in its new location at 314 Main Street in Tarkio on Friday, September 13. Don’s Tavern serves steaks, sandwiches, and beer.

• Mr. and Mrs. Evan Evans will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, September 15, with a reception at Tarkio United Methodist Church fellowship hall. Evan Evans and Audrey Clark were married September 17, 1924, in Wellington, Kansas, and have lived all their married life in Tarkio.

• Sonya Smith was one of 90 girls who competed in a state dress revue contest in Columbia, Missouri, Saturday. She modeled a wool coat she made in 4-H.

• Tarkio College began its 91st academic year Monday, September 9, with five new faculty members: Miss Jeanne Gibbs, sociology and gerontology; Mrs. Martha Goodban, social work; Mrs. Elisabeth Markowski, art; Mrs. Bonnie Morrow, education and physical education; and Mrs. Paula Wolfe, education and special education.

• The Tarkio Park Board recently conducted a survey regarding its recreational facilities, etc. The top four most needed improvements suggested were restrooms, more playground equipment at the South Park, parking at the community building, and picnic tables.

• The Tarkio Community Garden Club’s selections of Yards of the Month for September are: David and Judy Colflesh, 905 Olive Street; Gary and Janice Beneda, 1106 Park Street; Craig and Cheryl Martin, 706 College Street; Alan and Jackie Aeschliman, 511 Park Street; Darrell and Lois Wiley, 604 S. 6th Street; and St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

• Enrollment at Tarkio R-I Schools is down 24 students from when school ended in May. There are 271 students in kindergarten through sixth grade with the largest class being the third grade with 49. There are 226 students in grades 7-12, with the two largest classes of 42 students each being the freshmen and the juniors.
