• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Air Hostess” and “Brothers in the Saddle” with Tim Holt; and “Slightly French” with Dorothy Lamour and Don Ameche.
• When the Rock Port schools entered their second week of a new term last Monday, it was found that there was a total enrollment of 348 students. There were 155 in the high school and 193 in the grade school.
• W.D. Slemp reported to The Mail office that he sold 207 bushels of peaches from his orchard this summer. He lives southeast of Rock Port. Most of the peaches were sold to people who came to his place and picked the fruit themselves.
• In anticipation of a big corn crop, added to what corn farmers already have on hand, the Atchison County Agricultural Conservation Committee is providing storage space for 2,155,000 bushels.
• There remains on Rock Port’s Main Street a reminder of the hitch-rack days, when farmers would tie their horses up in front of businesses when they came to town. There is one in front of the Western Auto store, where a large staple is embedded in the cement sidewalk with a large ring attached.
September 5, 1974
• In Blue Jay Corner: The first graders responded to the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Scott Driskell and Randy Lininger said that they want to be firemen. Miles Leisman said he wants to be a grocery store man.
• Weekly weather report: The low of 36 was recorded September 3 with the high of 84 recorded August 30.
• The Atchison County Extension’s Homemaker’s Council is sponsoring an all-day “Work Day” at the Extension Center in Rock Port September 13.
• Rep. Hardin Cox announced that he supports the position of the Senate Select Committee on the “Ozark Music Festival.” The committee has recommended to the governor that he include permanent banning of rock music festivals in Missouri.
September 2, 1999
• During the month of August, Atchison County Development Corporation Director Laura Smith and assistant Rachel Graves visited the potato farms of Charles Garst, Garst and Sons, and Robert Lee Stanton, all located just outside of Watson, Missouri. Several million pounds of potatoes are harvested in Atchison County every year during the months of July and August. According to one potato chip company’s tests, this year Atchison County potato growers had the highest quality of potatoes in the nation.
• Colton Pfeil of Rock Port harvested a 2 3/4 pound tomato raised on a vine by his house. Colton said, “My secret is in the Miracle Gro.”
• Bob Chapple is retiring from Atchison County Extension Office. Bob’s 42 years with the extension service have been spent primarily in Atchison County, where he was a driving force behind the Graves Memorial Fields.
• The Rock Port Rotary Club hosted its annual Meet-The-Teacher picnic at the Rock Port City Park August 25. Around 125 people attended.
