• Rock Port’s Main Street had all the appearance of a Fourth of July celebration Thursday of last week, when the annual meeting of the Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative was held. While more than 500 persons registered at the door, it is known that the crowd was somewhere between 700 and 800.
• L. Blanche Templeton, County School Superintendent, provided a list of the schools of Atchison County. Fifteen rural schools are closed and not operating this year.
• The capacity of the bleacher seats constructed this summer at the new Pierce-Rupe athletic field at the local school plant should be taxed to their limit Tuesday when the football season begins. Rock Port, Essex, Hamburg, Tarkio, Sidney, and Peru will compete in a jamboree, an innovation in the Tri-State Conference.
• I.B. Gaines has his locker plant installed and plans to have it in operation this week. This is a big convenience for Watson.
September 12, 1974
• This summer’s dry season and near total lack of moisture has been a contractor’s delight for the three projects from U.S. 136 south to Route W north of Corning. Stan Stubblefield, resident engineer for the State Highway Department, reports all of the work is ahead of schedule, but this still means a late 1976 or 1977 date completion of the entire Interstate 29 project.
• Atchison County has five students among the 140-member Marching Bearcat Band of Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, that will perform Sunday, September 15, at the season opener in St. Louis Busch Stadium between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Eagles. Those students are: Rebecca Boettner, Diane Shineflew, and Emily Walter, Rock Port; Les Hermann, Westboro; and Tim Bolton, Tarkio.
• Rock Port’s Blue Jays defeated the Tarkio Indians 26-7 Friday night, stopping a three-year winning streak of the Indians before a crowd of 2,300.
September 9, 1999
• Bret and Nathan Baldwin, sons of Richard and Cindy Baldwin, showed steers at the 1999 Missouri State Fair. Bret placed fourth and Nathan placed ninth. Cory Stanton, son of Dan and Janette Stanton, placed sixth in his steer division.
• Roger and Lou Ann Pennel and their daughters, Theresa and Marcy, Fairfax were honored as the 1999 State Fair Farm Family from Atchison County.
• The Garden Club selected Pleasant View Nursing Home as this month’s “Yard of the Month.” The colorful petunias and other flowers are tended to by Don Schierkolk, a resident.
• Rock Port’s lady golfers teed off for their first match of the season Thursday, September 2. Golfing this year are Shannon Shineman, Jill Webster, Anne Reynolds, Jamie Schmielau, Rebecca Taylor, Kara Shaw, and Stefanie Dalrymple.
• The Rock Port Market advertised the following specials: Gold Medal flour, 88¢ for a 5 pound bag; Hamburger Helper, 99¢; boneless top round steak, $1.79 per pound; and Velveeta, 2 pounds, $3.99.
