Shirley Diana (Smith) Hughes, 85, of Rock Port, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa.
She was born October 7, 1938, in Atchison County, one of five girls of Charles Walter A. and Goldie Mae (Beam) Smith.
On December 21, 1957, she married Edward Lee Hughes, and they became parents of three sons and a daughter. Shirley was a lifelong farmer and raised cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, geese, chickens, ducks, and even peacocks. She served as secretary of the Atchison County Co-Op.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; sons, Edward Lee “Scooter” Hughes II, David Allan Hughes, and Steven Charles Hughes; sister, Betty Chamberlain; brothers-in-law, Greg Chamberlain, Bill Harrington, Jack Scamman, and Russell Hughes; and sister-in-law, Elaine Hughes.
Survivors include her daughter, Leann Hughes, of St. Joseph, Missouri; daughter-in-law, Tammy Hughes, Rock Port, Missouri; grandchildren, Jordon Hughes (Chad Sillers), Fairfax, Missouri, Jasmine (Jim) Chaney, Papillion, Nebraska, Jade Hughes and fiancée Ariel Janssen, Omaha, Nebraska, Jennifer Brenneman, and Jill (Blake) Thomas; great-grandchildren, Alexis and Grayson Hughes, Cody and Keith Thomas, Samantha, Allison, Jackson, and James Chaney, and Piper Sillers; sisters, Delores Harrington, Tarkio, Missouri, Joan (Bill) Woodward, Hamburg, and Beverly Scamman, Rock Port; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and interment will be held Friday, September 13, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port. Online condolences may be left at www.chamberlainfuneral.com.
