September 23, 1949

• Mr. and Mrs. Robert Graff and Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Sheppard, all of Tarkio, narrowly escaped possible serious injuries Sunday afternoon in a crash of the Groff plane at Lake Okoboji in Iowa. The couples were vacationing there and were on their way home when the plane crashed on take-off. The plane was demolished.

• Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. VanLeuven observed their 59th wedding anniversary Saturday at a dinner in the home of their son and daughter-in-lawn, Mr. and Mrs. Donald VanLeuven. The VanLeuvens were married September 17, 1890, at the home of the bride’s parents. The couple has resided in the Tarkio community all their married life.

• Funeral services for William Morgan Hand of Kansas City were held Tuesday afternoon. His widow is Mrs. Berenice Hand, formerly of Tarkio. Mr. Hand was the manager of the General Electric Company in Kansas City from 1912 to 1932. He and Thomas Edison were friends and worked on similar projects during early days in the elecrtical industry.

September 26, 1974

• Awards were given to Hy-Vee employees for their years of service at a longevity dinner held September 20 in Creston, Iowa. Those honored were: Virginia Jones, Kelly Rail, Tom Hughes, and Dorothy Mitchell, 5 years; and Dale Jones, 15 years.

• A five-generation photo was published in the Tarkio Avalanche. Pictured was new baby Tyson Lynn Gibbons, held by his grandmother, Mrs. Henry Gibbons of Westboro. Also pictured were Franklin Jackson, Walter Jackson, and Terry Gibbons.

• The high for the week was 90 degrees on the 18th and the low was 34 degrees on the 22nd. No precipitation was recorded.

• Agnes Derr was crowned Queen at the second annual Junior/Senior Rodeo, held September 21-22 at the Tarkio Rodeo Grounds. Scott Fogg and Dana Aegerter were named All-Around Cowboy and Cowgirl.

September 23, 1999

• Several Tarkio Academy students helped scrape off old paint on the outside of North Polk Schoolhouse in Tarkio.

• Beekeeper Dean Rolofson gave a program about his bees to the fourth graders at Tarkio Elementary.

• Thirty-three Tarkio High School FFA members and three adults traveled to Grand Island, Nebraska, to attend Husker Harvest Days. The farm show had many exhibits and presentations. Members were allowed to drive John Deere, Case, and New Holland tractors at the show.

• The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce donated $1,500 in funds it raised from the annual golf tournament to Tarkio’s Main Street organization. Tarkio Main Street organization was created in 1996 and has helped spruce up storefronts, purchase new window glass and awnings for businesses, and even purchased five lots on the south side of Main Street in the 300th block, with the buildings slated for demolition.

• Approximately 1,924 car and light truck tires, 189 semi-truck tires, and 91 rear tractor tires were collected at the third annual waste tire collection held September 10 and 11 at the old Atchison County landfill.

• Deloris Harris of Tarkio recently donated a 30-unit phone system to Tarkio High School at her late husband’s request. The phones are from the hotel that she and her husband, Ben Harris, used to own.

• Tarkio High School Fall Homecoming queen and king candidates are Jennifer Peregrine, Jamie Knierim, Anntonette Erickson, Mackenzie Martin, Brett Hurst, Nate Defenbaugh, Trent Brown, and Allen Wennihan.
