Tarkio/Westboro/Fairfax Food Pantry
The Tarkio/Westboro/Fairfax Food Pantry Board met Tuesday, September 10, with 16 in attendance. Churches represented were: Fairfax – Baptist, Christian, Methodist, and Presbyterian; Tarkio – Baptist, Catholic, Christian, Church of God, and Good News Church; and Westboro – Methodist and St. John’s Lutheran.
Pastor Cathy Riggins presided over the meeting. In July, 112 individuals representing 45 families were served. In August, 169 individuals representing 58 families were assisted. The numbers have increased significantly in recent weeks as well as the cost of food. Treasurer Anita Sutter did a comparison in regards to the amount of money spent in July and August in 2023 to this year’s amount in the same time period. The cost has doubled. With the increase in individuals assisted and the increased cost of food, the monetary gifts, as well as the food donated to the pantry, have been helpful. It was noted that the recent sports jamborees held at the Tarkio school brought in a significant amount of food. The board continues to appreciate the support of the young people.
The food pantry is open the third and fourth Tuesdays and Thursdays of September and October from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. It is also open the third Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. The board members will open the pantry in September and The Good News Church will open the pantry in October.
The food pantry schedule for the months of November and December will change. The food pantry will open one week early in each of those months due to the holidays. The Tarkio Christian Church will open the pantry November 12, 14, 19, and 21. In December the board will open the pantry on December 10, 12, 17, and 19. Clients should be mindful of these earlier November and December opening dates.
The next board meeting will be Monday, November 11, at 9:30 a.m. All board members are encouraged to attend.
The Tarkio/Westboro/Fairfax Food Pantry is currently low on the following items: apple juice (64 oz.), complete pancake mix, syrup (64 oz.), creamy peanut butter (16 oz.), boxed potatoes (au gratin, scalloped), Hamburger Helper, tomatoes (diced, diced chili ready, tomato sauce, rotel), and toilet paper.
The food pantry is located at 315 Main Street in Tarkio.
