• The Atchison County Balanced Farming Association will present William A. Albrecht’s famous movie “The Other Side of the Fence” at Tarkio High School.
• Zane Beal is confined to a hospital bed in Maryville with pelvic fractures following a traffic accident Monday afternoon south of Tarkio. Mr. Beal was pinned under the tractor while attempting to attach a corn picker to it.
• Mrs. Myra Low was the guest speaker at the Tarkio Rotary Club luncheon Tuesday in the bamboo room of the Walnut Inn in Tarkio. Mrs. Low, who appeared in costume, spoke about her travels in Guatemala.
• Slight damage was reported to the caretaker’s cottage, occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Ben Carrow, at the Community Park in Tarkio. An overheated hot plate resulted in a scorched window casing and smoked up the kitchen.
• Residents received a preview of winter Thursday morning when temperatures dipped to 28 degrees at 5:30 a.m. The frigid weather was accompanied by an early frost which brought the growing season to an end. The 28 degrees recorded was the lowest in the state, getting Tarkio off to an early start on maintaining its reputation as “the coldest spot in Missouri.”

• The Tarkio R-I Schools, in conjunction with the Maryville Family Guidance Center, is presenting a program entitled “How To Be A Parent” for all interested members of the community.
• Reese Craven was seriously injured Tuesday morning at his home in Westboro when a 243 Magnum exploded in his face as he was sighting in the weapon. The gun shattered and the bolt struck him in the right cheek.
• Howard Harris of the Bureau of Fisheries of the Missouri Department of Conservation Commission and his assistant were in the Tarkio City Park Monday delivering bass, blue gill, and catfish to those who had applied for the fish.
• The popular band the “Poker Chips Combo” supplied the music for the dancing at the first resident dance, co-sponsored by Lakeview Manor and Glenwood, Iowa, State Hospital-School. Over 400 residents attended to listen to the band, comprised of Patty and Harold Collins of Watson, Missouri, Ricky and Richard Graham of Tarkio, Missouri, and Bob Taylor of Glenwood.

• Heartland Recreation Center in Tarkio is hosting a semi-pro football game Saturday, October 2. The Nodaway County Lightning will play the Minnesota Stallions at Kyle Field.
• Ask Elsie Fae: “This year’s Fly-In was another big success. The only thing missing was the syrup for the pancakes. When I asked Rotarian Gary Riley for more syrup, he brought another bottle as empty as the one I had. In response to my, ‘What’s the matter with you?’, he gathered up all of the nearly empty bottles from the other tables and set them in front of me. Just as the syrup-hungry crowd was advancing angrily toward me, replenishments arrived from Hy-Vee. I can survive most of the slings and arrows in life, but deliver me from a mob armed with dry pancakes. In the future, this will be known as the ‘Maple Syrup Incident.’”
• The U-Turn Diner has opened at 108 Main Street in Tarkio. Sharon and Gary Sparks of Tarkio are the proprietors.
