Rock Port traveled to Oregon, Missouri, Thursday, September 26, to take on the #4 ranked South Holt Knights. Both teams were undefeated going into the contest.
The Jays would receive the ball to start the game on their own 15 yard line. Six plays later quarterback Corbyn Jakub would hit receiver Jack Meyerkorth on a post route. Jack would go 59 yards for the touchdown. The two point conversion was not good, giving the Jays the early lead at 6-0. The Jays would hold the Knights to a three and out. With a short punt the Jays would have the ball on their own 38 yard line. Brock Holmes would take Jakub’s hand-off up the middle to put the Jays up 12-0 and with Jakub’s two point conversion the Jays were now up 14-0. South Holt quarterback Cole Medsker would move the ball on a long pass to the Jays’ 5 yard line but it was called back on a holding penalty. On the next play, Medsker would try a quick out that was tipped at the line by Gabe Gebhards and Kendan Melton-Davis would intercept it and go 30 yards for a touchdown. Jakub’s two point conversion was good bringing the score to 22-0 with 5:24 left on the clock in the first quarter.
Following the kick-off Medsker would go 50 yards on a quarterback keeper to put the Knights on the board. South Holt’s P.A.T. was good, making it 22-7. Two plays later Jakub would hit Meyerkorth on a crossing route and Meyerkorth would go 65 yards for a touchdown. Following a high snap Jakub would toss it up and Brock Holmes would be there for the two point conversion. This would bring the score to 30-7 Rock Port.
South Holt would find the end zone again on a pass from Medsker to tight end Griffin Kemerling, who would go 55 yards. The P.A.T. was good, bringing the score to 14-30. The Jays would have some trouble moving the ball and dug themselves a hole at 3rd and 14 yards, before Jakub would hit Holmes on a long pass for six points. Meyerkorth’s catch from Jakub made the score 38-14 Rock Port. Following a fake punt the Knights would put their final points on the board for the night and the score was 20-38.
Rock Port’s defense was coming up big all night with big plays. Jack Meyerkorth would get an interception and take it back 80 yards for six. Ryder Herron recovered a fumble on the one yard line setting the Jays up for their next touchdown by Holmes to bringing the score to 54-20. Jack Meyerkorth would add to the lead with a punt return for a touchdown. Holmes’ two point conversion was good, bringing the score to 62-20 Rock Port. Brock Holmes would put the final six points on the board, making the final score 68-20.
The Jays take on Nodaway Valley at home Friday night. It will be the Blue Jays’Pink Out Night.
