October 7, 1949

• Funeral services were held for Mrs. Dan (Zora Pebely) Shaw at Davis Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Shaw was born in Milton July 5, 1866. Her entire life was spent in this vicinity and she lived just northeast of the present city limits before there was a town of Tarkio.

• The Cub Scouts of Tarkio are sponsoring a variety show Saturday, October 19, at Leitch Chapel in Rankin Hall at Tarkio College. The cast will consist of 10 youth from Tarkio and 10 youth from Kansas City, Missouri, in a joint effort led by O’Dell Anderson, a senior at Tarkio College who is leaving October 26 for Alexandria, Egypt, to teach at the Schutz American School. This is his way of saying farewell to Tarkio College.

• A “New Life” Crusade for Christ will be held at the Tarkio First Baptist Church October 13-20 with the Rev. Howard Judah as the evangelist.The Bob Smith Trio will also be performing.

October 10, 1974

• Paul Lester and Loren Brown from Tarkio and Jack Wilson and Bud Husing from Rock Port attended the Masonic Grand Lodge of Missouri September 29 and 30 in St. Louis. This was a meeting of Worshipful Masters and Senior Wardens from throughout the state.

• The Tarkio Indians defeated the Mound City Panthers 20-12 in an exciting homecoming victory Friday night in a game played before a near capacity crowd. Paula Ohrt was crowned homecoming queen and Paul Simmons was crowned king.

• The mercury dropped to 24 degrees on the seventh after a high of 77 on the third, according to Lester Morton, local official weather observer.

• A monstrous 51 1/2 pound spoonbill was caught on a snagging pole with 120 pound test line by Larry Poppa. He was fishing in the Missouri River at Gavins Point in Yankton, South Dakota, with Harold Volker and Junior Jones this past weekend.

• Lydia and Brooks Hurst of Tarkio are pleased to announce the birth of their second child, a daughter, Leeann Isabella Hurst. Bella was born Thursday, September 30, at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax, Missouri. She is also welcomed home by sister, Alissa, age two years.

• The annual “for fun” feud among the riverboat captains in Brownville, Nebraska’s, Smith family will take place Sunday, October 10. The starter’s gun will boom at 2:00 p.m. and the Great Riverboat Race will commence between the Spirit of Brownville, captained by James Randel Smith, Sr., and the Belle of Brownville, captained by James Randel Smith, Jr. Passengers will be able to buy tickets to ride on the boats, which will race from Brownville to Langdon, Missouri, and back.

• The 1999 Tarkio High School Fall Homecoming King is Nate Defenbaugh and Queen is Anntonette Erickson.

• The Tarkio Volunteer Fire Department battled a blaze Tuesday night, September 28, at the old 4-H building north of the dog pound at the South City Park in Tarkio.

• A police chase entered Atchison County as officers pursued a stolen vehicle on U.S. Hwy. 59 north of Tarkio. A spike strip was deployed at the old IBP barn, however, the driver exited the highway and traveled east on a gravel road. When he approached Route O, the driver, a 24-year-old man from Council Bluffs, Iowa, attempted an evasive maneuver but lost control and ended up in a ditch, where he was apprehended.
