October 14, 1949
• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “South of Death Valley,” “Casablanca,” “The Girl From Jones Beach” with Virginia Mayo, Ronald Reagan, and Eddie Bracken, and “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” with Bing Crosby and William Bendix.
• The Tarkio Boosters and Boosterettes will perform on the stage at Virgil Harbison’s Mayfair theatre in Shenandoah, Iowa, Saturday and Sunday nights. Accompanied by the Booster band, four couples will square dance. Gerald Flesner of Tarkio will also entertain with his Donald Duck act.
• Miss Mary Jane Peck, Tarkiesta Queen of 1949, went to Kansas City to represent Tarkio as a candidate in the American Royal Queen Contest. Miss Peck is sponsored by the Tarkio Boosters and Boosterettes.
• Pleasant autumn weather and a varied program Saturday attracted a large crowd to the Tarkio College campus and downtown for the 1949 Homecoming festivities. Miss Iris Teachout, senior from Shenandoah, was crowned homecoming queen. She rode in the parade downtown. The homecoming dance was held in Brown Gymnasium with Jimmy Caton and his orchestra providing the music.
• Westboro High School defeated the Fairfax Bulldogs 24-14 in Westboro’s homecoming football game Friday night. Westboro took an early lead and romped to victory without a serious threat. A crowd of 600 saw the game.
October 17, 1974
• Paul Scott Simmons and Paula Ohrt were named Tarkio High School Homecoming King and Queen. Paul is this year’s starting quarterback. During the summer, he was an exchange student to Columbia, South America. Paula is a majorette in the marching band.
• The Farmers and Valley Bank in Tarkio is displaying the elephant collection and other antiques amassed through the years by the late Lee Roy Hooper.
• Tarkio College and Lloyd Dalbey, who serves as Sports Information Director, received recognition from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for its 1974 spring sports brochure in the reproduced category. The award to Tarkio College is the first in the recent past history of the school.
• George Nixon of Tarkio, along with Doug Miller of Fairfax, were the two first place winners at St. Joseph’s Punt Pass and Kick contest Saturday. The two will go to Kansas City Saturday for Districts at Arrowhead Stadium.
• Mary McEnaney celebrated her 103rd birthday October 14 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port with family and friends.
• Mrs. Tom Struble of Tarkio will appear on the Grace Crawford show on KFEQ-TV Friday, October 25. She will demonstrate how to make corn husk dolls.

• Ask Elsie Fae: “Saw Jane Close Sunday afternoon and had to help her in and out of her car. Her right knee was so stiff she could barely walk. She had spent Saturday night until three in the morning doing the Twist, the Locomotion, the Chicken Dance, and the Stroll. The moral to this story is if you do the Stroll all night Saturday, you do the Crawl all day Sunday.”
• Rachel Meyer of Tarkio recently took over the ownership of the beauty shop, formerly known as Heather’s, in Tarkio and has renamed it New Images. The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting there on October 22.
• Peggy Watkins of Tarkio has been named branch manager/loan officer of Mercantile Bank in Tarkio. She has worked at the bank since it was called First National in 1974. She started as a teller at the bank after graduating from high school.
