October 28, 1949
• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Rim of Canyon,” “Devil’s Henchman,” “The Home of the Brave,” and “Impact.”
• Midshipman Rob Roy Greenley of the U.S. Navy, who is now in his fourth year at the naval academy at Annapolis, Maryland, is an officer in the brigade organization for the first term of the academic year. Midshipman Greenley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Greenley.
• Wayne Thompson and Guy Miller, proprietors of the Standard service station on Highway No. 275, have won a tire-selling campaign for Standard Oil dealers in the St. Joseph territory. For selling the most tires, the boys get a three-day, all-expenses paid trip to the Standard Oil’s Sugar Creek refinery and a trip to watch the Missouri Tigers play Kansas State at Columbia on November 19.
• A number of friends and neighbors of Mrs. W.D. Slemp came to her home southeast of Rock Port Tuesday and shucked most of her corn crop. Many men provided pickers, wagons, teams, tractors, and gasoline, as well as the labor, and several women provided dinner.
October 24, 1974
• The Continental Club met October 9 at the Memorial Building for a luncheon and work night. New drapes were hung and the banisters were painted.
• The Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department responded to a tractor and field fire on the Richard Johnson farm October 10. The fire started from shucks on the manifold of the tractor and then got into the corn picker. Johnson burned one foot when he attempted to kick out the fire before the department arrived.
• Joy McKenney of Rock Port is retiring from the Atchison County Office of the Division of Family Services after 17 years of service. Mrs. McKenney has been employed as a social service worker.
• A haunted house tour sponsored by the Cadette Girl Scout Troop 85 of Rock Port will be held October 29 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. for all ages. The house is located at 700 West Calhoun Street in the old Charles Hartman residence.
• An estimated $7,000 in damages were caused by four juvenile boys on a BB gun rampage between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. October 21 in Rock Port.
October 21, 1999
• It was a beautiful day for the Rock Port High School’s College American History class to take a trip to Fairbury, Nebraska. The students visited the Rock Creek Station and Homestead National Monument to learn what it was like on the Oregon Trail.
• The Rock Port School Room Mothers held a successful bake sale on October 8. There was also a homecoming cake raffle, won by Mr. Steve Umbarger and Mrs. Carolyn Rosenbohm. Those cakes were baked and donated by Mandy Ottmann.
• The Rock Port fifth graders repainted and repaired the playground equipment. They painted the jungle gym, the car, the truck, and the swing, and installed some new tires for the car and truck.
• This week’s Rock Port Rotary Club had two special guests attending the meeting. Dawson and Norma Richerdson from South Shields, located in the northwest part of England, attended the meeting in Rock Port as part of the Rotary Friendship Exchange program. Dawson is a member of the Rotary District 1030 in England.
