November 4, 1949
• A fire at the George Knepper farm northwest of Tarkio destroyed a 4,000-bushel crib of corn and a corn elevator as well as doing some damage to a steel corn crib. The Tarkio rural fire-fighting equipment went to the farm and assisted in keeping the fire from spreading to other buildings on the property.
• Walter Schmidt, who opened a modern variety store in Rock Port on February 13, 1942, and has since operated it under the name of Walter’s 5-Cent-to-$1 store has sold the business to Harry W. Shultz and Elvin M. Jensen, both of Council Bluffs, Iowa. The store will be under the local management of Mrs. Darrell Wagner.
• Atchison County’s Friendship Food Train Committee will have a meeting at the Triple-A offices Wednesday, November 9, at which an interesting motion picture will be shown telling the story of what became of the cars of corn that were shipped from Atchison County last year.
• The proposed consolidation of school districts, including the Fairfax independent district, was ratified by a vote of 424 to 178 Thursday of last week. The new district includes, other than Fairfax, Mount Hope, South York, Oak Grove, Prairie Flower, Evening Star, Long Branch, Wolfe, Pleasant Ridge, Elkdale, Milton, Daleview, and Irish Grove.

• Richard Horstmann was visited last Thursday by a relative from the island of Java, Capt. Peter Schrage, Bandung, Indonesia. He is taking military training here in the U.S. for about 10 months.
• The grand opening of Thiesfeld’s in Rock Port was deemed a big success. The new store is located on Main Street south of the Toggery, formerly occupied by Clardy’s. Shelly Thiesfeld is the young manager of the store, which carries fabrics, ready-to-wear clothing, and yard goods.
• Ralph Oswald, who lives west of Rock Port in a home on a hill, woke up October 29 around 5:00 a.m. and noticed footprints in the yard. Investigation revealed that someone had climbed his tower and made off with a $257 antenna setup. Bill Erdman left a truck full of beans to go home for lunch and upon his return discovered he had been cleaned out.
• Alfred Wright of Rock Port celebrated his 100th birthday Friday, October 25, at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born in 1874 in Indianola, Iowa, and later moved with his family to a farm between Phelps City and Langdon, Missouri, where they resided until the Missouri River flooded in 1952. They then moved to Rock Port.

• There are four new students at Rock Port Elementary this year. Heidi Moyer is a first grader and her sister, Courtney, is a fourth grader. They came from Farragut, Iowa. Also new are Chad and Aaron Cosby. Chad is a second grader and Aaron is a first grader.
• Donald Ingram, a 38 year employee of the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), retires from the department effective December 1. He began his employment with MoDOT in 1961 working in maintenance at the Rock Port facility, where he spent his entire career.
• The winners of the bike safety day bicycle giveaway were Jalainey McMahon and Jessica Merriett. Sixty-three kids enjoyed learning about bicycle safety and the do’s and don’ts of bicycling.
