November 18, 1949

• Charles F. Admire has purchased the photography studio, formerly known as the Sandberg studio, located in the Harvey building on Main Street in Tarkio. Although he recently resigned his position of 38 years in the telephone company, he grew up in the photography field and for three years operated the Admire Studio in Rock Port. Later he did Kodak finishing while carrying on his telephone duties.

• The building program begun at the United Presbyterian Church in September neared completion this week. A new asbestos tile roof was installed, replacing the 54-year-old roof. All brick work was pointed up and the two main front steps were rebuilt. Hand railings were added, extending the sidewalk, interior work included repair of all windows and sashes and the installation of new front doors will complete the project.

• Doris Adamson was crowned Tarkio High School Homecoming Queen Friday night preceding the homecoming dance held at the Community Building. Selection of the queen and her attendants was made by the football squad. Lois Jean Kemper was named “Queen of the Evening” at the homecoming dance and was presented with a strand of pearls by Bob Tebow and His Collegians, Northwest Missouri State College Orchestra, who played for the dance.

• “Good Eating” at Hy-Vee in Tarkio: Tom turkeys, 49¢ per pound; hen turkeys, 59¢ per pound; Libby’s solid pack pumpkin, 25¢ for a tall can; Hy-Vee brown’n serve rolls, pkg. of 12 for 33¢; and Kellog’s croutettes stuffing mix, 49¢ for a 7 oz. pkg.

• Tarkio High School held its first annual sardine eating contest Friday, November 15. The contestants were Coach Palmeiro, Tim Sollars, Coach Brown, and Paul Simmons. Each had a can of sardines and several crackers. The time limit was 30 seconds. The winner was determined by the first who finished or the one who ate the most in the time allowed. Paul Simmons was the winner.

• A popular thriller, Dracula, is being presented at the Tarkio College Mule Barn Theatre. Playing the lead role of Count Dracula is Marc Wooters. Other members of the cast include Barb Jaderberg, Rick Callen, Ritchie Work, and Joe Cunningham. The director of the play is Dexter Armistead.

• Danny Davis of Mound City arrived October 30 to assume his duties as administrator of the Northview Manor Convalescent Home.

November 18, 1999

• Zachary Schebaum of Tarkio recently won the first Northwest Missouri PUNT (Protect Us, Not Tobacco) Championship held November 13 at Missouri Western State College’s football game in St. Joseph.

• Doug Kingery, girls’ basketball coach at Tarkio High School, was recently named Coach of the Year by the Missouri State High School Activities Association. This honor covers all classes in the state of Missouri. Kingery’s overall record at Tarkio is 132-34 in seven seasons with the 1998-99 team going 32-0 and winning the state championship.

• The second Tarkio Community Gospel Sing raised $270 for the Tarkio Community Building’s air conditioner fund.

• Juggling mimes Jay and Leslie Cady, who studied mime with the famous Marcel Merceau, performed at Heartland Recreation Center in Tarkio.
