• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “Challenge of the Range,” “Rusty Leads the Way,” “Sorrowful Jones” with Bob Hope and Lucille Ball, and “Deep Waters” with Dana Andrews and Jean Peters.
• The first major surgery performed at Community Hospital in Fairfax was performed Saturday, an appendectomy for Cecil Graham of Rock Port.
• Approximately 400,000 bushels of resealed Atchison County 1948 corn has been stored in the recently constructed government storage bins just west of the community elevator. Thirteen of the 14 quonset bins now contain about 22,000 bushels each and the 14th bin is being filled. Each bin can hold up to 35,000 bushels, but they are not being filled to capacity.
• Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vaught and daughter, Joan, and Roy Haun drove to Williams, Iowa, Saturday where Mr. Vaught bought three canaries that were imported from Holland. The birds were purchased from a bird dealer for $96. The birds are of a rare variety, being the nearest to red of any birds in this section of the country.

• At the annual Fairfax High School Barnwarming Tuesday evening, students named Dick Wake Favorite Fella and Darla Hansen as Chapter Sweetheart.
• An eight and one-half mile segment of Interstate 29 in Holt County, extending north of Oregon to Mound City, was officially opened to traffic Tuesday, November 19.
• The annual Atchison County Band Day will be held November 25 in the Tarkio High School Gym with concert bands from Fairfax, Rock Port, and Tarkio participating. The 175-piece combined group will practice under the direction of Kenneth Stitt, assistant director of bands at Cameron High School.

• The fall deer harvest got underway November 13. Opening weekend, there were 94,481 deer killed statewide. Atchison County reported 589 deer killed during opening weekend, down 135 from the previous year.
• The Fairfax American Legion Auxiliary donated apples to the Fairfax R-3 staff Monday, in observance of American Education Week.
• Dr. Wallace Carpenter was named a top two finalist out of 538 nominations for Country Doctor of the Year. He moved to Rock Port in 1952 and since then has delivered 3,000 babies. He still makes house calls and once delivered a baby at a home after learning the family didn’t have insurance. He once rescued a family from an auto accident and gave them a room in his home. He has given his family’s Christmas turkey to a needy patient and adopted several children in need. In his spare time, he travels to Jamaica to provide free medical care for the poor.
• A very nice trip to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception was enjoyed by 23 people of the Presbyterian Church as well as friends from the churches of Craig and Mound City. Conception Abbey is a Benedictine monastery founded in 1873. Abbot James Jones guided the tour explaining the many Beuronese Murals as well as the remodeling of the sanctuary.
• A beautiful autumn day prevailed Saturday, November 13, bringing in between 300 and 400 people to assist in the celebration of Community Hospital’s 50 years of providing health services.
