November 25, 1949

• Showing at The Tarkio Theatre: “The Big Sombrero” with Gene Autry, “Angels in Exile” with John Carroll, “It Happened One Night” with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, “Father Was A Fullback” with Fred MacMurray and Maureen O’Hara, and “Let’s Live Again” with Hedy Lamarr and Robert Cummings.

• The Rev. John H. Stewart D.D. and Mrs. Stewart have moved into the residence of Dr. J. A. Thompson at 302 N. 8th Street in Tarkio. The Stewarts, both Tarkio College graduates, moved here from Atlantic, Iowa, where they have been living since their return from India.

• Robert Graf Motors at 506 S. 10th Street in Tarkio is advertising the new Pontiac 5-passenger streamliner six cylinder sedan coupe for $1,768.

• The first snow flurries of this winter fell on Monday, but only a trace of precipitation was recorded. The week’s maximum temperature was 74 degrees on Saturday and the low was 18 degrees last Friday and Monday.

November 28, 1974

• Mr. and Mrs. Kent Clark are the parents of a second son, Kurtis William, born November 18, 1974, at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Missouri. The baby weighed 8 pounds and 11 1/2 ounces at birth and has a brother, Kevin, age seven.

• First National Teller Tells column: “A Christmas greeting from Annabel (Shaum) Brown comes from Bavaria where she is teaching at an air base. Ken Roberts, our agri-business trainee, leaves next month for four months of traveling and observing business and banking all over Europe.”

• The Tarkio Girl Scouts is an active organization, starting with Brownies and going into Junior Scouts and Cadettes. There are approximately 90 girls currently participating in the program. Cadettes is the newest addition to the scouts, having been added late last spring. There are now 20 girls in Troop 208.

• The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce hung their Christmas decorations on Main Street this week with the help of St. Joseph Light and Power and United Telephone crews. The lights in the decorations will be turned on at dusk and turned off around midnight by city police officers in order to conserve energy.

• The Tarkio Water Co., a not-for-profit corporation created to avoid an increase in water use charges in excess of 90%, was given approval for the purchase of the Tarkio water system from the St. Joseph Light and Power Co. Authorization for the sale, which is to be made for a price of $172,000, is to become effective December 24, 1974.

November 25, 1999

• Brooks Hurst has been awarded the American FFA Degree. Brooks, son of Kevin and Nancy Hurst, is a graduate of Tarkio High School and has been a Tarkio FFA member for six years. He was presented the award at the 72nd National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.

• Mary Jones was named Tarkio Academy’s October Employee of the Month. Mary, night shift youth counselor at Pershing Hall, was selected by her students and by a campus-wide vote of the staff. She received a $100 bonus, a recognition plaque, and a preferred parking space for the month of November.

• Will Johnson of Tarkio was honored by the Southern Economic Development Council (SEDC) as the Volunteer of the Year for the state of Missouri.

• Cora Ann Simpson of Tarkio will be retiring from the Atchison County Farm Service Agency Office as of December 31, 1999.
