December 2, 1949

• The editor of this newspaper, Alfred H. Volkmann, was shocked and saddened to find his sister, Miss Louise Volkmann, lifeless in the kitchen around noon on November 29, due to a heart ailment. Louise was a charter member of the Order of Eastern Star, where she was noted for her 50 year membership. From birth to death, Miss Volkmann lived in the same home.

• Bill Bartholomew, a University of Missouri student, has been accepted as one of the chorus of 365 voices who will be heard singing “The Messiah” on Sunday, December 18, over WDAF. The program will last three hours and the chorus will be accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra.

• Cpl. Jack Smith of Langdon and Pvt. Kenneth Long, Jr. of Rock Port met up in Yokohama, Japan recently. Long has been in Japan nearly a year and this is the first time he has met anyone from his home community. Cpl. Smith is stationed in the southern part of Japan.

• One of Atchison County’s most prominent and best-known farmers and cattlemen passed away Thursday, November 24. B.L. Roberson and his wife had finished moving to their new home in Savage addition in Rock Port on Tuesday when he was overcome, having been in poor health for several years. Berlie Roberson was the son of pioneers and lived most of his life a short distance of his birthplace in the Centennial community.

November 28, 1974

• This year, Rock Port has a new sport, wrestling. Under the direction of Coach Mark Dulgarian, the boys are working hard gearing up for the season. The captains are Dan Stanton and Randy Alley.

• Showing at Paramount Theatre in Rock Port – “Herbie Rides Again” in Technicolor and “The Castaway Cowboy.”

• Rock Port Mayor Frank Heyen has been elected to the Missouri Association of Regional Planning Commissions. The new structure of the association will give more decision-making authority to elected officials of the cities and counties that belong. Previously, most decisions were made by hired officials.

• Hunters harvested a total of 215 deer in Atchison County during the 9-day firearms season.

• Rock Port will have a resident optometrist for the first time in years when Dr. and Mrs. Jeff Powell move here in June. Dr. Jeff Powell, 26, is now in the Air Force at Craig Air Force Base near Selma, Alabama, where he is a Captain with six months more service.

November 25, 1999

• Come celebrate the holiday season at Trail Boss every Wednesday night in the month of December. Specialty items include $1 hamburgers, $1.50 plain tenderloins, $3.25 spaghetti with garlic bread, and 50¢ French fries.

• Cub Scout #59 held their first pack meeting November 11 at Trail Boss Restaurant. The Pack has 20 boys.

• Local resident Debbie Young and her children have been diligently participating in the St. Joseph News Gazette’s contest “One for the money, two for the schools” the past several weeks. Much to their surprise, they were notified last week that their entry had been pulled from the batch of correctly answered entries. They won $1,000 and the News Gazette will give the Rock Port Elementary School $1,000 as well.
