Two people were injured in a three-vehicle accident at 6:33 p.m. Monday, November 18, 2024, at the 106.8 mile marker on northbound I-29, three and one-half miles south of Rock Port, Missouri.

The accident involved a 2017 Toyota Camry, driven by a 79-year-old male of Lawrence, Kansas; a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia, driven by a 32-year-old male of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia, driven by a 52-year-old female of Omaha, Nebraska.

All vehicles were northbound when the front of the 2020 Freightliner struck the rear of the Toyota Camry in the passing lane. The Toyota traveled into the driving lane and the front of the 2022 Freightliner struck the rear of the Toyota. The Toyota came to rest on its wheels off the east side of I-29 facing east. The 2022 Freightliner overturned onto the driver’s side and began to skid. It came to rest on its driver’s side facing east in the middle of the I-29 northbound lanes. The 2020 Freightliner came to a controlled stop on the northbound shoulder of I-29.

The driver of the Toyota sustained minor injuries and was transported to Nemaha County Hospital by an Atchison-Holt ambulance. The driver of the 2022 Freightliner sustained serious injuries and was transported by Atchison-Holt Ambulance to Nemaha County Hospital then transferred to Bergan Mercy Hospital. All three drivers were wearing seat belts.

The Toyota Camry was totaled in the accident and towed by Double M. The 2020 Freightliner received minor damage and was towed by Benefiels. The 2022 Freightliner was moderately damaged and was also towed by Double M.

The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper J.D. Schmedding. He was assisted by Cpl. K.L. Ebersold, the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, and Atchison-Holt Ambulance District.
