The East Atchison and Rock Port high school basketball teams are competing in the Mound City, MO, Basketball Tournament this week. See last week’s edition of the Atchison County Mail for a complete schedule.

The East Atchison high school wrestling squads will be competing in the Auburn, Nebraska, Triangular Thursday, December 5, at 5:30 p.m. This is the first wrestling event of the season for the boys (the girls will also be competing). The Rock Port high school wrestling season gets underway this Saturday, December 7, at the Marceline, MO, Tournament.

There are two blood drives taking place in Atchison County on Friday, December 6: Community Hospital-Fairfax Conference Room from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Rock Port High School South Gym from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Help save a life this holiday season by donating blood.

You can help support our local Salvation Army (and spread holiday cheer!) by donating at two locations this weekend. The bell will be rung in Fairfax on Friday, December 6, and in Tarkio on Saturday, December 7.

Rock Port’s annual Christmas Mall will be held Saturday, December 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Atchison County Memorial Building in Rock Port, with a variety of vendors and crafters set up all day, Step Above Dance Studio performance on the balcony at 11:00 a.m., and Santa Claus visits beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce invites all area children to enjoy pancakes with Santa Claus (while wearing pajamas) Saturday, December 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Tarkio Community Building. The $10 admission fee includes a meal of pancakes and sausage with a hot chocolate bar, as well as ornament making, making reindeer food, writing Santa letters, visiting and getting your picture taken with Santa, and a bounce house.

Join the Tarkio Parks & Recreation for the annual Christmas Light Parade Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. on Main Street in Tarkio. Get those floats, cars, trucks, tractors, bikes, horses and yourself ready for “Christmas in Paradise” (think tropical paradise – “Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say, on a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day”).

The Tarkio Board of Public Works is holding a retirement reception for Superintendent Curtis Hedrick Tuesday, December 10, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the office at 519 Main Street. Curtis has worked for the city for over 40 years.

The Fairfax Preschool-12th Grade Winter Program will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 10, in the high school gym. The Fairfax Music Boosters will be hosting a soup supper in the cafeteria from 4:45 to 6:00 p.m.
