• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: Gene Autry in “Cowboy & Indians,” “Special Agent,”  “The Stratton Story” with James Stewart and June Allyson, and “We Were Strangers” with Jennifer Jones and John Garfield.

• Mrs. Maxine Gellert has sold her home on the street to the city park to Harmon Gerdes.

• A group of about 300 farmers were treated to a dinner and party hosted by the merchants of Rock Port last week at the Memorial Building. The men were entertained by the Tarkio Trio Eva, Ross, and Arlene. The Legion 49ers quartette also performed. The main speaker was Cullen Wright, publicity director of the Union Stockyards of Omaha, Nebraska.

• New ’75s are in stock at Conley Bennington’s Chevrolet-Buick-Opel dealership in Rock Port. Check out all the new features on the Monte Carlo coupe, Nova custom 4-door sedan, and Vega Estate wagon.

• A gravel truck driven by John Sidenstucker, St. Joseph, struck a guard rail at the north end of Mill Creek Bridge between Nishnabotna and Corning. The truck came to rest on top of the bridge banister and caught fire.

• Funeral services were held for Mr. Leslie H. Jones of Rock Port. A survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack, Mr. Jones joined the Snowden Lumber Co. and in 1960, he and his family opened their own lumberyard, which he operated until his death.

• The Veterans Administration reported it spent an estimated $516,069 in Atchison County in the fiscal year that ended June 1974. Expenditures included $319,451 on compensation and pension, $162,869 on education and vocational rehabilitation, and $33,749 on insurance and indemnities.   

December 2, 1999

• The Rock Port United Methodist Church will offer a concert of brass and pipe at the church Sunday, December 5. The concert will feature local and hometown musicians playing seasonal music. A nativity open house will follow in the fellowship hall with over two dozen nativity scenes on display.

• New Horizons donated $500 to the Optimist Club and to the Rock Port Elementary Playground Equipment Fund. The money was raised from ad and ticket sales from the C.A.B.A. Tournament held this summer.

• Rock Port Rotary presented a $25,000 check to the Rock Port R-II Schools for the remaining balance of the track resurfacing project.

• Rock Port Telephone will begin sending out owner patronage capital credits. The first one will be payment of one half of the fiscal year 1992 (July 1991-June 1992).
