• Showing at The Tarkio Theatre: “Blood On The Moon” with Robert Mitchum and Barbara Gerdes, “Horseman Of The Sierras” with Charles Starrett and Smiley Burnette, “Fighting Man of the Plains” with Randolph Scott, Bill Williams, and Victor Jory, and “Wizard of Oz” with Judy Garland and Frank Morgan.
• Snowfall measuring five inches wrapped Tarkio up in a Christmas blanket this week. The snow began falling shortly before 8:00 a.m. Wednesday and continued intermittently until 5:00 p.m. Thursday. Maximum temperature for the week was 50 degrees recorded at 3:30 p.m. Friday and a minimum of 15 degrees at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.
• Two transit planes remained grounded at Gould Peterson Memorial Airfield due to the weather. Passengers continued to their homes by automobile and train, leaving their planes hangared here.
• A traffic caution light has been installed at the intersection of Highways 4 and 59 in Tarkio.
December 26, 1974
• Midwest Agri Services, Inc., Salina, Kansas, has purchased Westboro Supply from Melvin Rolf. The same services will be continued under the new business, known as Westboro Agri Services. Joe Miller will be the resident manager.
• A farm family from Atchison County will be featured as the Farm Family of the Week on WOW-TV Channel 6 in Omaha on Friday, December 27. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hurst of Tarkio will be interviewed for the farm portion of the noon news. The Hursts and their three sons farm 1,560 acres in partnership with Mr. Hurst’s father. Their main crops are corn and soybeans, but they also have a stock cow herd of 70 cows.
• Specials at the U Save Mart in Tarkio: York Aspirin, 100 tablets for 11¢; 100 count paper plates, 73¢; Scope mouthwash, 12 oz. bottle for 69¢; and plastic trash can bags, 20 bags and 20 ties for $1.19.
December 23, 1999
• The annual Lions Club Christmas Parade was the best ever with over 23 entries. Even though temperatures were in the 20s with a brisk wind, it didn’t keep a capacity crowd from packing Main Street to watch the event.
• The Tarkio High School Wrestling Homecoming King is Jimmy Lindsay and Queen is Mackenzie Martin.
• Ask Elsie Fae column: “While we were sleeping, two men in the Atchison County Jail in Rock Port climbed up the chimney to freedom. What goes up must come down . . . But guys, in the future when you make a ‘drug bust’ remember there’s more than one way to get ‘high.’”
• The Tarkio High School nutrition and wellness class of Tarkio High School had a food fair for the fourth graders. All the food was made from tofu or low fat food. The fourth graders did not find out what the food was made from until after they ate, but it didn’t matter to them once they were told.
• The Tarkio Lions Club hosted its second annual Christmas dance for Tarkio High School students December 17 at the Community Building. Approximately 60 students attended. Dave’s Convenience donated hot dogs and Hy-Vee donated buns for refreshments and door prizes were handed out throughout the night thanks to many local donors.
