I wrote a sincere poem last year entitled “There Is An Empty Chair” in memory of my beloved mother, Pat Walker, who passed away February 17, 2023. This is my follow up poem, “Empty Chair Despair.” This Christmas, may God impart to every grieving heart His divine peace that passes understanding. For everyone grieving the loss of a precious loved one, my heart goes out to you with love – because we share an empty chair.

“Empty Chair Despair”

It’s Christmas once again,

and there is an empty chair.

Memories come flooding back,

but my mother isn’t there.

There’s so much I want to tell her,

so much I want to share,

Sometimes the

      overwhelming grief

Is more than I can bear.

My heart is worn and badly torn,

I fall into despair.

I pray for Jesus’ comfort because

we’re no longer a pair.

How are things in heaven, Mom?

What’s Christmas like up there?

Celebrating with Jesus,

I’m sure it’s beyond compare.

Do choirs of heavenly angels sing

Amidst the glow of a star’s flare?

Do trumpets sound and

      the skies rebound

Their joyous celestial blare?

You walk with Jesus hand in hand,

Without a brace or a wheelchair,

Heaven is your eternal home

      in His everlasting care.

Merry Christmas, Mom.

You’re in my every prayer.

Until the day we meet again,

There is an empty chair.
