December 30, 1949

• Last week, F. B. Strickler received a Christmas greeting card from T.J. Atwood of Sultan, Washington. Mr. Atwood was an early-day school teacher and singing teacher who lived in a house in a grove east of the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery some 70 years ago. Mr. Strickler went to school with Mr. Atwood. Mr. Atwood, who is 95 years old, is married to a DeArmond, a well-known, early-day family of this community.

• Head to Skellytown, two miles south of Fairfax on Highway 275, on New Year’s Eve for a dance with Little Jack Jackson and Orchestra. Little Jack Jackson is one of Kansas City’s finest bands and the man who plays two horns at once.

• Adger C. Erwin, well-known farmer and extensive land owner of the English Grove community west of Fairfax, passed away at his home Tuesday morning about 8:30. Adger Calvin Erwin was born in Greenbriar County, West Virginia, on August 25, 1877, and came to Missouri with his parents in 1879. The family located northwest of Fairfax where Mr. Erwin spent the remainder of his life. He was one of the first graduates of Fairfax High School, was a school teacher for awhile, and was one of the staunchest supporters in interest, financial help, and attendance of the English Grove Presbyterian Church.

• Twenty-four members of the December graduating class of the University of Missouri, Columbia, were commissioned into the armed forces as Reserve Officer Training Corps graduates in ceremonies December 20. Lane L. Seymour, Fairfax, was among those who received commissions. He is assigned to the Naval Nuclear Power School in California as an ensign.

• Mack Miller of the Exchange Bank of Fairfax was recently named to serve as a member of the 50-man board of directors of the Missouri Independent Bankers Association.

• The Fairfax Forum, oldest business establishment in the community, enters its 83rd year of continuous publication with this issue.

• There were many winners in the merchants drawing and promotions by the Fairfax Firemen and American Legion Saturday, December 21, in Fairfax. Frank McQueen of Craig won the grand prize of a television set. Winning the firemen’s grocery orders were Eva Baker, Dave Portis, Wilma McKenzie, and Joan Whitford.

• The home of Warren Wright of Fairfax was destroyed by a fire Thursday night, December 23, at approximately 11:45 p.m. Warren was not at home at the time of the fire. It completely destroyed the residence, which was 103 years old and was the family home of Warren’s great-grandparents, Firmen and Eva Strickler.

• The Fairfax Kiwanis Club recognized the 1999 Corn Yield winners: 1st, Michael Oswald, 218.31 bushels per acre; 2nd, Jack Fries, 196.26 bushels per acre; 3rd, Dustin Graves, 189.37 bushels per acre; 4th, Harold Ray, 165.67 bushels per acre; 5th, Brett Johnson, 163.25 bushels per acre; 6th, David Gomel, 160.97 bushels per acre; and 7th, Kasie Morris, 135.36 bushels per acre.

• Kent Fisher of Fairfax and his nephew, Ben Fisher of Springfield, Missouri, built a “Fisher”man snowman complete with a fishing rod, life jacket, and fishing hat.

• Lisa and Tony Mitchell of Fairfax are pleased to announce the birth of their first child, a daughter, Tacy Renea, born at 5:24 p.m. December 20.
