January 13, 1950
• The sixth annual Tarkio Firemen’s Ball will be held at the Community Building Thursday, January 26. Music will be provided by Cliff Kyes and his orchestra. Admission is $1.
• Showing at The Tarkio theatre: “On the Town” with Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Betty Garrett, and “Challenge to Lassie.”
• Funeral services for the Rev. Stephen Spencer Keith, 90-year-old Tarkio resident, were held Tuesday. Rev. Keith served as a Baptist minister for 53 churches for a total of 45 years. He performed 464 marriage ceremonies and conducted 673 funerals.
• The alertness of officers and a Rock Port filling station attendant this week broke up what appears to be a four-state livestock rustling ring. Three men are being held in the Atchison County Jail on grand larceny charges.
January 16, 1975
• Gertrude Strobel passed away Saturday, January 11. She taught in several schools including rural, elementary, high school, and college and also served as principal and superintendent. She taught at Tarkio College and in 1969 was recognized for her more than 50 years of service in education and in 1970 received a Doctor of Humane Letters Honorary Degree.
• Mrs. Wayman Hannah’s Gene Autry collection will be on display at The Farmers and Valley Bank in Tarkio January 9-25.
• First Class Petty Officer Jerry L. Driskell has been home on leave during the Vietnam conflict. He spent Christmas with his wife and daughter and parents. This is the first Christmas he has been home in four years and also the first time he has seen his six-month-old daughter, Jennifer.
• Congressman Jerry Litton was in town Saturday afternoon and met with as many of his constituents as were brave enough to be out in the frigid weather.
• Carl Martin was presented the Otoe District Scouter of the Year award. Mr. Martin has been active in scouting since 1963 and has been Scoutmaster since 1967. There have been 26 members of Troop 88 achieve the Eagle Scout rank in that time and 13 more will have finished their efforts to achieve that rank this year. The troop also received a Governor’s Round-Up Cup for adding over the quota of new scouts this year.

• Funeral services were held January 6 at Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio for Lorna Deana Brown, 95, of Tarkio. Lorna taught school for one year on an Indian reservation in South Dakota. She also worked at a weapons and ammunition manufacturing plant in Kansas City during WWII. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Centerview Club, the Young at Heart Club, and the Cosmopolitan Book Club, all of Tarkio.
• Mildred Sharp of Tarkio will celebrate her 100th birthday on January 24. Mildred and her husband, Carl, moved to Tarkio in 1959. They owned and operated a cafe until 1972.
• Tarkio Pelleting Corporation (TPC) became Ag Partners Cooperative, Inc. on January 7, 2000. Ag Partners is based out of Hiawatha, Kansas. Ag Partners purchased the assets of TPC.
• Tarkio High School will celebrate its winter/basketball homecoming January 21. Homecoming queen and king candidates are Jamie Knierim, Jennifer Peregrine, Allen Wennihan, Luke Cox, and Brandon Deets.
