• Tarkio’s cigarette tax has added more than $2,350 to city coffers during the first five months of its existence. Revenue from the cigarette tax is earmarked for street maintenance.

• Mr. Frank Black, pastor of the Central United Presbyterian Church of Omaha, Nebraska, has accepted the invitation of the student body and faculty of Tarkio College to be the speaker during Religious Emphasis Week February 12-14. Dr. Black was a chaplain in the Navy during WWII and his congregation numbers over a thousand members, the second largest congregation west of the Mississippi.

• Squire Ice Cream is advertising Neubert’s Oysters – famous, extra delicious, direct from Baltimore; specially selected – extra large.

• In spite of adverse driving conditions last month, Atchison County had the best accident record for December of the 15-county area served by Troop H of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Only one accident was investigated by the troop in Atchison County that month. The year total for Atchison County is 57 accidents with one fatality and 40 persons injured.

• Showing at The Tarkio theatre: “The Big Noise” with Laurel and Hardy; “The Story of Seabiscuit” with Shirley Temple and Barry Fitzgerald; and “You Gotta Stay Happy” with Joan Fontaine and James Stewart.

January 23, 1975

• Mrs. Austin (Estella) Greer celebrated her 93rd birthday January 7 at their home near Tarkio. She was surprised by her friends with a birthday cake, gifts, and card shower (she’s received almost 100 cards). A lifelong resident of Atchison County, Estella has spent 72 years at her farm home north of Tarkio.

• Tarkio College’s revival of the Artist-Lecture Series will begin with the presentation of classical guitarist Miguel Rubio February 10 at Leitch Chapel. Others on the list include: Dr. Albert Glock, Jerusalem archeologist; Jack Ledbetter, poet; Ars Antiqua of Paris, France, Instruments of the Renaissance Period; Georgia state senator Julian Bond, “The New Politics;” Russ Burgess, parapsychologist, “ESP in Action;” Kansas City Philharmonic performing Haydn’s “Mass in Time of War” (with the Tri-State Metropolitan Chorale, Tarkio College Concert Choir and Tarkio College Community Orchestra); and Commander Lloyd Bucher (USS Pueblo) “What’s Right With America.”

• Tarkio has been participating in the foreign exchange program the past four years. This year, Tarkio welcomed Margarita Moreno from Cali, Colombia, and Gabriel Ganme Elias from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The heavy snow that burdened everyone else brought excitement to Gabriel as he had never seen snow before.

• A mobile classroom was installed just east of the elementary building. Classes for any handicapped students in the three-county area will start soon in the building and the teacher will be Miss Donna Paterson.

• Larry Taylor is the new parts manager at Tarkio Equipment Company. He replaces Darwin Houghton, who will begin farming March 1.

January 20, 2000

• A pre-construction conference was held Thursday, January 13, at the Tarkio Water Company. The contract to construct Tarkio’s new water tower was signed with Pitt-Des Moines, Inc. It is expected that the new tower will be completed by July 2, 2001.

• Over 500 cans of food were collected by Tarkio R-I students during the FCCLA Food Drive. The sophomore class won a pizza party for bringing in the most cans.

• Kenzie Fischer, Joey Swenson, Jennelle Freeman, and Trenton Powell competed in the Elks Club Hoop Shoot competition Saturday, January 15. Joey Swenson placed second in his age group to advance to the Hoop Shoot in Red Oak, Iowa.
