The new Atchison County Health Center (formerly the Tarkio Avalanche building) will allow each staff member to have their own office. Pictured is the check-in area.

Atchison County Health Department Administrator Julie Livengood’s office has windows that allow her to see who is walking in the front door in case additional assistance is needed.

The nurses will have their own station at the new Atchison County Health Center in Tarkio, and the bathroom nearby will allow for samples to be taken and given to the nurses privately.

This room will be a huge conference area equipped with smart capabilities and a kitchen for cooking classes.

The new health center has multiple bathrooms, one of which is equipped with a shower.

Work continues at the Atchison County Health Department’s new facility on Main Street in Tarkio. Located in the former Tarkio Avalanche building at 521 Main Street, the new health center offers a larger space and modern set up in which to provide health services to those in need in Atchison County.

With room to grow to better serve the residents of Atchison County, the Atchison County Health Department staff will be moving from their current 2,000 square foot building to one that has 6,000 square feet. They will be able to provide for a better patient experience with universal accessibility and more confidentiality.

Each staff member will have their own office and the facility boasts an increase in exam/clinic rooms from 1 to 5 (including two larger/safer immunization rooms and a potential dental area). There is a dedicated WIC room, a huge conference room with smart capabilities and a kitchen for cooking classes, a break room and respite area for staff, multiple restrooms (one of which is equipped with a shower and another with privacy access for samples), and room for storage. There is also potential for mental health offices. Drive through testing and vaccinations will also be available using the facility’s east door. A generator will run the entire building, providing potential use for a cooling and warming center.

Although much has been done to make this previously open-spaced building into the multi-room health center taking shape, more renovations are still underway. Staff members hope to be treating patients in the new facility by mid summer.
