• The following are a few of the Atchison County feeders who made shipments to the St. Joseph market last week: Fairfax – Harold Lawrence, 35 1,103-pound steers, $26; Rock Port – Otis Shaver, 25 223-pound hogs, $15.50; and Tarkio – Knox & Shaum, 51 211-pound hogs, $15.85.

• The Bank of Atchison County is celebrating its 80th anniversary with a celebration Friday, January 20. When the bank started, it had a capital of $10,000 and was housed in a small frame building on the site of the current one. The bank’s present combined capital is $175,000 and it has resources of over $3,500,000.

• Sales at the Gallup Golden Rule Stores in Rock Port include: dresses for $3.99, 100% wool coats for $14, nylon slips for $2.98, and fluffy chenille robes for $3.98 and up.

• Hy-Klas Food Store and Locker Service in Rock Port advertised the following: Jello (limit 2) for 5¢ each; pork chops for 45¢ per pound; Flavor Kist saltine crackers, 4 cello wrapped sections for 25¢; and giant size Oxydol for 65¢.

January 16, 1975

• Cox’s Conglomerations column: “In an old magazine we find the statement, ‘Television will be a wonderful thing, but it will never replace the old-fashioned keyhole.’ After seeing some of the late shows on TV, I’m not so sure the prediction was correct.”

• Mark Baker and Jo Lynn Jochim were crowned Rock Port Christmas Ball King and Queen December 20 at the Christmas Ball.

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Jeremiah Johnson” with Robert Redford and “The Deathmaster” with Robert Quarry.

• Atchison County received its second snow storm of the new year January 10 with eight inches of snow falling. High winds accompanied the storm causing drifts up to eight feet high and more on a number of roads. Gene Bunn, city manager, reported $746 was spent on snow removal this week and $244 last week making a total of $990 so far this year.

• Fire destroyed over half a load of furniture belonging to five families January 13 when the wheel bearing of a Red Ball truck line semi-trailer carrying the load overheated and caught fire.

• McDonald’s recognized two outstanding employees in the restaurant. Melissa Merriett and Stuart Heck are very hard workers and dedicated to their jobs.

• Jessica Moran and Suzanne Hurst won the opportunity to go to London through tryouts during a cheerleading camp. The girls stayed at The Tower Thistle and visited the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, saw the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, visited Covent Garden, St. Paul’s Cathedral, The Strand Theatre, the British Museum, the National Gallery, and Harrods.

• The Rock Port High School Wrestling Homecoming candidates are Hope Bailey, Rebecca Taylor, Jamie Schmielau, Buck Meinders, Eric Bressler, Clint Stoner, and Bill Bailey.
