• Frank C. Peterson and James F. Prather are co-partners in a new Tarkio business which will serve Atchison County farmers. The Peterson Prather Lime and Phosphate Company will be known as the P.P.L. & P. Co. The company is equipped to spread any amount of fertilizer and lime from a 100 pound minimum to a maximum of three tons per acre.
• The Tarkio Public Library board, in cooperation with the county council, may present to the voters of Tarkio at the April election the proposition to make Tarkio a part of the Atchison County Library system. The Tarkio library building is owned by the city as an outright gift from Mrs. J.C. Culbertson, but is not legally bound to be used for any specific purpose.
• Tarkio was gripped with a cold wave this week as the mercury dropped to a frigid eight below zero at 6:30 a.m. yesterday. Sleet and snow also fell throughout the week and winds, ranging to 30 miles per hour with strong gusts, occurred Tuesday.
• Showing at The Tarkio Theatre: “Jungle Jim” with Johnny Weismuller and “Border Incident” with Ricardo Montalban and George Murphy.
• An overall and apron round and square dance will be held at the Tarkio Community Building Thursday, February 2. Music will be provided by The Macks, with Hammond electric organ and drums, and The Southwest Blue Grass Boys. Admission is 60¢.
January 30, 1975
• Mr. Charles Z. Freeman, 76, a Tarkio resident since 1927, passed away January 27 at his home. A farmer for most of his life, Mr. Freeman retired in 1952. He had worked for MFA, at one time operated the Tarkio Motor Co., and had served as part-time policeman for the City of Tarkio.
• The Tarkio FFA Chapter held a Barnwarming Saturday, January 11. The dance was held in the school’s new vocational agriculture building.
• The Tarkio Elementary third grade parachute routine was held January 24 at the Tarkio vs. Craig basketball games in the Tarkio High School gym. The students were under the direction of P.E. teacher Nancy Barrett and music teacher Sidney Cooper.
• Carl F. Martin, Scoutmaster of Troop 88 in Tarkio, was awarded the Silver Beaver Award. This is the highest award given to men by the Boy Scouts of America for distinguished service.
January 27, 2000
• Funeral services were held Friday, January 21, at the United Methodist Church in Westboro, Missouri, for Evelyn June Turner of Westboro. Evelyn, 65, worked diligently selling Avon in Westboro and Tarkio, earning many awards in the President’s Club, Honor Society, and Rose Circle.
• A tragic 24-vehicle accident occurred Sunday, January 23, on I-29 north of Platte City, Missouri, claiming the lives of 10 people. Several people with Atchison County ties were involved in the crash. Duane Lester, former Tarkio resident who had been visiting his parents in Tarkio and was on his way home, slid into the median to avoid hitting the back of a semi that was on fire. He jumped out of the car, grabbed his dog, and started running and at that time the semi exploded. Susan Smith, a former Tarkio resident, and her son and a friend were heading home from visiting Susan’s mother in Rock Port when they slid into the pile-up. After having trouble getting CJ, her son, out of his seat belt, it finally released and they took off running as a pickup hit their car. Susan’s friend jumped up on the fender of the pickup and jumped out of the way to avoid getting ran over. They then all ran up the hill and heard the truck explode.
• Jamie Knierim was crowned Tarkio High School Basketball Homecoming Queen and Luke Cox was crowned King Friday, January 21.
