• “Farm Auction” by Jackson Lee Nesbitt is one of a collection of 99 paintings given to the University of Missouri by the Scruggs Vandervoort Barney department store company of St. Louis. The collection, depicting life and customs in Missouri and valued at more than $75,000, consists of works of 14 outstanding American artists and a number of the paintings depict scenes in this area.
• Mac Flanagan has sold the Dotham store, stock of merchandise, and residence to A.W. Klein and R.J. Adams, brothers-in-law of Tarkio. Mr. Flanagan has owned the Dotham store for two years. For many years it was an important trading center.
• The operating table for the major surgery room at the Fairfax Community Hospital has recently arrived and been installed.
• Cpl. Glen DeLong, stationed at Barksdale Air Base in Louisiana, was one of the men chosen to perform the air salute, which participated in the burial services for General “Hap” Arnold at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.

• St. Joseph, Missouri, Police Officer Manuel McClaskey, a native of Fairfax, was shot during a bank robbery in St. Joseph on Monday, but is reported to be in satisfactory condition. McClaskey reportedly was the first officer to enter the bank and encountered the bandits as they were making their escape. He was shot in the face and a second officer apprehended the suspects just outside the bank.
• Two local businesses were burglarized during the past week. The Kountry Kitchen reports the loss of a large supply of steaks and chicken, as well as other food. Lucille’s Dariette was also broken into and a stereo, some cash, cigarettes, candy bars, and other items were taken.
• His expertise at sinking the basketball from the free throw line has won J Smith an opportunity to compete in the Elks Club State Hoop Shoot at Jefferson City February 8.
• Mrs. Marguerite Mulvania was guest of honor at a retirement tea at Community Hospital Association Thursday, January 23. Mrs. Mulvania was persuaded to leave what she had intended to be retirement from a career as a registered nurse some 13 years ago and has been a dedicated member of the nursing staff ever since.

• LCPL Jason L. Frohn is back in California after spending four weeks with his family following completing his first year in the military January 19, 2000. Frohn completed his training in communications at Twenty Nine Palms Marine Air/Ground Combat Center in November 1999.
• Fairfax FFA Greenhands attended a Greenhand Motivational Conference in St. Joseph. They were Robbie Pester, Harold Ray, Miles Smith, Cole Simmons, A.J. Harding, Bryan Adams, Charlie Rudisill, Katie Heitman, MiKayla Bowlin, Kody Kemerling, Michael Oswald, Johnathan Wheeler, and Daniel Herrington.
• The Fairfax High School Basketball Homecoming candidates are Marcy Pennel, Lacy Sly, Traci Davis, Alex Hunter, David Gomel, and Shawn Johnson.
