• Judy Maness, five-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Maness of Watson, is perhaps the world’s youngest telephone operator. The telephone switchboard is in the Maness home and when patrons call central, they often hear a sweet, childish voice say “Watson,” and get immediate and friendly service. Judy has even put calls through and satisfactorily handled many long-distance phone calls made by Dr. J.A. Gray, Watson’s physician and long-time member of the Missouri legislature.
• “Yellow Sky” with Gregory Peck and Anne Baxter is showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax.
• With store-wide sales in both their places of business, the B.P. Hunter Stores are celebrating their 37th anniversary as a Fairfax business this week. It was 1913 when B.P. Hunter entered the mercantile business in Fairfax and has been in business here continuously since.
• Clem Peters was awarded for his 25 years of service as local agent for the Great American Insurance Company during a luncheon given at the Blue Bell Cafe Thursday.
• A portable x-ray is now part of the equipment at Fairfax Community Hospital. The machine can be taken right to the patient’s room or bed and used when patients are not able to be moved. It was purchased from funds provided by the Atchison County branch of the American Cancer Society.
February 6, 1975
• J. Hayden Pyeatt will conduct adult classes in woodworking, small engines and welding at the vocational ag building in Fairfax Thursday evening.
• Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Price will celebrate their 41st wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday, February 16, at the Exchange Bank of Fairfax. Mildred Brickey of Mound City and D.A. Price of Fairfax were married February 7, 1934, and have resided in Fairfax most of their married life.
• Both Fairfax High School basketball teams, as well as the junior high girls’ team, won the 275 Conference titles.
• Everett Lee True, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram True of Craig, was recently promoted to the rank of General in the U.S. Air Force. A graduate of West Point, General True is presently stationed in Vienna, Virginia.
February 3, 2000
• A drama club has been formed at Fairfax High School. Tammie Holcomb is the sponsor of the club, which includes around 30 students. The club will travel to Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, February 8, to watch the play “Guys and Dolls.”
• The new Sacagawea dollar coin is now in circulation in the United States. Sacagawea was a Shoshone Indian woman who helped guide the Lewis and Clark Expedition to the northwest.
• Dustin Graves, a 17-year-old junior at Fairfax High School, recently obtained his pilot’s license. He’s been working toward earning the license since February of last year.
• Fairfax High School Basketball Homecoming King and Queen are Alex Hunter and Traci Davis. The two were crowned at the basketball homecoming games Friday, January 28.
