Ok, I admit it, I am a failure. Probably in more areas of my life than I would like to admit, but there is one that is glaringly obvious as February passes and we begin our journey into March 2025. The fact that I am a physical challenge failure is obvious. I am sure you have all seen or heard of the different 30 day or 75 day challenges that float around social media that promise if you just stick to this routine and check all the boxes for a set amount of days, you will be transformed into a leaner, more energized you. I have seen the results myself, watching friends on Facebook or in my circle completing it and truly being rewarded physically for their discipline but there is something in me that lacks the willpower to work out twice a day for 75 days even though I have attempted it several times before.
As a Methodist, I feel like I am drawn to challenges like this because I look at John Wesley’s means of grace in a similar light, and I have seen the benefits in my spiritual life and walk with Christ. In fact, the Methodist movement was given its name because its followers were so methodical in their spiritual lives when it came to these things. Wesley’s Means of Grace are ordinary, often intentional daily activities or observances that God can use as channels to draw us into a closer relationship with Him; therefore strengthening us in our faith much like the physical activities that are listed in these challenges strengthen us physically. These means of grace are prayer, reading your Bible, Communion, Fasting, Acts of Mercy, and Acts of Piety.
As we approach Lent, I am looking at these 40 days as somewhat of a challenge, not to slim down my waistline (although that would be great, ‘Lord, hear my prayers!’) but rather to slim down the worldliness in my faith, to strengthen my relationship with Christ rather than my triceps, and to improve my endurance when the devil challenges me, rather than my running endurance. If you and your church observe the Lenten season I invite you to join me, the Good News Church and the Westboro Methodist Church in this “challenge” to engage in the Means of Grace throughout these 40 days and see how God uses our intentionality to reach us in new and exciting ways! I am even offering a hard-copy checklist for you if you stop by our office! Early Easter Blessings from me to you!
