Dr. Steve Waigand and Brittany Paris from Atchison County have been selected for University of Missouri Extension’s Leaders Honor Roll.
The Honor Roll recognizes outstanding leaders and volunteers who have helped to advance the work of MU Extension in their communities.
Brittany Paris is a special education teacher at the Rock Port R-II High/Middle School in Rock Port, Missouri. During her first year in this position, she is implementing activities that will allow her students to grow in various life skills. She has allowed the Atchison County Youth Program Associate to bring SNAC programming into her classroom to help her students learn how to cook on their own as well as learn how to plant various vegetables in order to become more self-reliant.
Dr. Steve Waigand, preschool through fifth grade principal, has been at the Rock Port R-II School system for nine years. Dr. Waigand shows and encourages a positive atmosphere for all kids to feel safe and a part of a family. “As the Missouri University Nutrition Program Associate, Dr. Waigand has allowed me to share the Show-Me Nutrition series with all students, preschool through third grade, as they discover ways to eat healthy food and be active,” said Regina Ripley, NPA. Participants learn about the five food groups, they are actively involved in physical activities, and practice handwashing techniques. “Thank you, Dr. Waigand, for always supporting Missouri University programs.”
“Our dedicated partners and volunteers are vital to carrying out our mission to improve lives, businesses and communities by focusing on Missouri’s grand challenges around agricultural growth, economic opportunity, educational access, and health and well-being,” said Randa Doty, MU Extension Engagement Specialist. “The Leaders Honor Roll is an opportunity for county extension centers to recognize the many ways volunteers lead and serve at the local and county level. Their efforts are invaluable, and we honor those who are committed to advancing the work of MU Extension.”
Selection for the Honor Roll is based on community leadership efforts supporting MU Extension’s efforts to enhance economic viability, build strong individuals, families and communities, and create and sustain healthy environments. Each fall, extension and engagement specialists work with their county faculty and staff to identify two outstanding individuals or couples for recognition.
Waigand and Paris were recognized at the Atchison County Extension Council Annual meeting on March 5, 2025.
