April 20, 1950

• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “South of St. Louis” starring Joel McCrea, Zachary Scott, and Alana Hale and “Down To The Sea In Ships” with Richard Widmark and Lionel Barrymore.

• Schooler Furniture Company advertised the following: a beautiful Lane cedar hope chest, $59.95; living room sets, $99.50; bedroom sets, $109.50; and dinettes from the factories of Daystrom, Chromcraft and Douglas, $59.50.

• Another frozen food demonstration is being given under the auspices of the Craven Implement Co. by International Harvester’s home economist Mildred M. Coles. Freezing is a new method of preserving foods to retain their original flavor until ready for consumption and has many advantages over the old method of canning. Miss Coles was trained by Irma Harding and her staff of Home Economists at the Evansville Test Kitchen.

April 24, 1975

• The John Richards American Legion Auxiliary met Monday, April 21. Grace Finch, poppy chairman, announced the winners of the poppy poster contest: 6th grade – Marvin McCartney 1st, Chris Owens 2nd, and Dana Heits 3rd; and 5th grade – Billy Ilsley 1st, Nancy Brandt 2nd, and Elaine Park 3rd.

• Local Boy Scouts Doug Miller, Todd Walker, Pat Nichols, Kent Fisher and Doyle Yandell, along with their Scout Masters Lewis Vaught, Larry Vaught, and Tom Miller, joined others at Camp Geiger April 19 for a work day. The boys scraped paint, prepared buildings for a new coat of paint, and performed other duties necessary to make the campsite ready for summer campers.

• Airman Richard L. Umbarger, a 1974 Fairfax High School graduate, has been assigned to the Nellis AFB in Nevada following his graduation with honors from the airframe repairman course at Chanute AFB in Illinois. He is now qualified to perform modifications and structural repair of aircraft components and will serve with the Military Airlift Command.

• Ask Elsie Fae column: “I’m filing a class-action lawsuit against the manufacturers of ‘child-proof’ lids. Last week, I tried to take the lid off a new bottle of cough medicine. Since there was no one here under the age of three to remove it for me, I coughed and struggled for about 45 minutes. Then, consumed by an uncontrollable rage, I went to the kitchen and got the meat cleaver. I crushed the lid in three hefty blows, but in the process, put two nicks in my kitchen sink. There should be a law that ‘push down and turn’ lids can not be sold without a paper sack full of prozac.”

• The Fairfax Fire Department has improved its communications capability by the addition of radios. These radios have multiple channels and should provide additional coverage throughout the area, particularly in the department’s storm watch capability.

• Newly elected Fairfax R-3 School Board members Wayne Vance and Julie Koop were sworn in during the special board meeting April 13. Also at the meeting, board members Dave Scarbrough and Mike Hawkins received plaques thanking them for their dedication to the school board.

• In the classifieds: Farm fresh eggs for sale, $1.50 a dozen.
