April 21, 1950

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “The Plunderers,” “Girls’ School,” “Mr. Ichabod and Mr. Toad,” and “Black Magic.”

• Greenley’s Market was entered early Friday morning of last week by two robbers who escaped with some $750 to $800, but only after being shot at twice by H.W. Greenley, who makes a practice of sleeping in the store.

• Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Strader, Rock Port’s longest married couple, reached their 64th anniversary April 20. Mr. Strader observed his 85th birthday April 14.

• Lewis Oswald, who is engaged in electrical installments and repair work, suffered fractures of the bones in his feet shortly before noon Tuesday. Oswald was working at the John Graf farm premises near the Brownville bridge when the ladder he was on started to slip. He jumped to the ground and thus injured his feet.

• The test oil well which is being sunk on the Carl Hunter farm south of Rock Port has reached a depth of 655 feet and has been cased at that depth. For the time being, operations are at a standstill, but will be resumed shortly until there is evidence of oil or the test is found unsuccessful.

April 17, 1975

• Hippo Melvin Oil Company is advertising a new service of 24-hour tire service on the farm or on the road. “We have just received our new, modern tire service truck for fast and efficient service. We have all the equipment necessary for any type of tire repair, tractor, truck or car. Ronnie Bradley and Neal Lansdown will be operating the new service.”

• H.M. Scamman was helping out at the Rolf Fertilizer-Supply Company Friday and parked his tractor right out in front of the business while he was operating one of their rigs. In broad daylight, someone sneaked up and took off with his tools and tool box.

• An $8,886 courthouse tower clock will commemorate the bicentennial celebration in Atchison County. The clock will have three faces operating on the north, south, and east and will include a carillon chime system.

April 13, 2000

• Northwest Missouri Cellular announced a number of system advancements this year. “In 2000, we will be doubling our network with the construction of nine new cell sites through-out our service area. Along with these, Northwest Missouri Cellular customers will see our digital deployment of caller ID, short text messaging, and pre-paid cellular service.”

• Rock Port Board of Education met in a reorganizational meeting Thursday, April 6. The newly elected board members, Willie Holmes and Harold Lawrence, were sworn in.

• The Atchison County Highway Department completed the new Eilers and Cooper bridge on County Road #416, which replaced a 1920 structure. The new bridge is 130 feet long and 22 1/2 feet wide. The total cost was $83,941.09, which is $101,000 cheaper than it would have been had it been contracted out.

• Duane and Lillian Thiesfield’s car was the victim of the wind last week. A King’s Auto sign blew off, barely missing Miss Lil. Their car was not so fortunate and the sign broke the windshield.
