• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Maggie and Jiggs In Society,” “Cowtown” with Gene Autry, “All The King’s Men” with Broderick Crawford and Joanne Dru, and “The Great Sinner” with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner.

• Specials at Lee Pemberton & Sons Hy-Klas Food Stores and Locker Service in Rock Port include: 10 pounds of sugar, 83¢; Riverside dill pickles, quart jar for 19¢; Hy-Klas flour, 5 pound bag for 35¢; grade a milk in a paper carton, homogenized quart for 16¢ and pasteurized quart for 15¢; and minute steaks, 15¢ each.

• Mayor J.J. Wright reported that the preliminary reports from the census state that Rock Port has a present population of 1,508. Rock Port’s census 10 years ago was 1,406.

• Mr. and Mrs. Cole Harmon of Watson reported that they lost the old Harmon home, a large shed, brooder house, and chicken house to fire last Saturday afternoon. It is thought that sparks from a fence-row fire ignited the buildings.

• Soft water has now come to local home owners. It is because of the new equipment recently installed at the city pumping station.

• The Missouri River is staging its annual spring threat to lowlands in Atchison County, having risen to flood stage since last week. Considerable land in the southwest part of the county is already covered by water and some buildings have been moved to higher ground.

April 24, 1975

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre: “The Sting” with Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and Robert Shaw, “5 Fingers of Death,” and “Ride In A Pink Car.”

• A rash of farm robberies has been reported in the past week in Atchison County. Bill Umbarger of Fairfax reported a loss of $1,500 in miscellaneous farm equipment and tools stolen from his shed. Wilbur Hannah of Tarkio reported 7 rolls of barbed wire, 5 rolls of baling wire, 300 bushels of soybeans, 50 bushels of clover seed, and tools totaling $5,000 missing from his shed. Bill Harrington of Tarkio reported $700 worth of items stolen including 14 bushels of seed corn, 9 bales of baling twine, and 1 roll of barbed wire.

• On April 16 and 17, the residents of the rest home enjoyed playing horseshoes and working crafts. The residents are selling crafts towards the purchase of a movie projector for the nursing home.

• The high for the week last week was 84 on the 17th and the low was 26 on the 20th.

April 20, 2000

• Willie Holmes and Steve Umbarger were sworn in at the Rock Port Board of Aldermen meeting. They will continue to represent the North and South Wards respectively.

• Easter buffet at the Brownville House included ham loaf, fried chicken, or baked ham with all the trimmings for $7.25.

• Carly Michael, a youth study exchange student from South Africa, was the guest speaker at the Rotary District 6040 conference in Kansas City April14-15.

• On Monday, April 10, the Rock Port School District observed National Sibling Day. The school currently has four sets of twins attending: Brenda and Vicki Thompson, Orry and Kory Paris, Russell and Randy Evans, and Jason and Aaron Carpenter.
