May 4, 1950

• Showing at The Tarkio Theatre: “That Midnight Kiss” starring Kathryn Grayson and Ethel Barrymore (which will be the senior class benefit show).

• Military services were held last Friday morning in St. Louis, Missouri, for Joseph F. Campbell, Jr., a sergeant in the Air Force who was killed in action December 1, 1943, near Vossenack, Germany. The sergeant, from Tarkio, was a gunner aboard a Flying Fortress that was believed to have been shot down on its third mission. Originally, he was reported missing in action. But in July of 1946, his parents were notified of his death in action.

• Wyman Williams, left-handed first baseman and pitcher with the Minnesota Clowns, will play here Monday. A .305 hitter, Williams hails from Dodge City, Kansas. The two pro teams playing in Tarkio to start off the 1950 baseball season are the Omaha Rockets and the Minnesota Clowns.

May 8, 1975

• Commencement ceremonies for 100 graduating seniors at Tarkio College will be held in Schechter Auditorium on May 11. Major General Gerhardt W. Hyatt, Chief of Chaplains of the U.S. Army, will speak at the baccalaureate service and will receive an honorary degree at commencement. He was responsible for the design of the Army’s modern chapels.

• The 1975 Fly-In Breakfast at Gould Peterson Memorial Airport in Tarkio will take place Sunday, May 18. Plane rides are $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for children 12 and under. There will be a drawing for free plane rides every 15 minutes. The much longer runway of 3,400 feet will be dedicated.

• Scoring a team total of 48 points, Tarkio girls won their third District track title in a row. Tarkio will send eight girls in nine events to the state meet in Moberly May 9. Tarkio competitors who won their events include: Marta Allen, softball throw; Angela Shaw, shot put; Jill Vette, mile run; and Leasa Bywater, Susie Postlewait, Dianna Shinpoch, and Carmen Bywater, 440 Relay.

• Pipes for the new water tower in Tarkio arrived on Friday, April 28. These new water main pipes weigh 400 pounds each and are 20 feet long and 12 inches in diamater. There is a total of 1,560 feet of new piping which will run from 13th and Maple to 13th and Park, and then two blocks west. The new 12 inch piping will connect the new tower to the existing water main in Tarkio.

• The Tarkio Brownies planted flowers at the Tarkio Housing Authority in Tarkio. Laura Mae Torix, a resident at the housing complex, will be watering the new flowerbeds for the Brownies.

• Graveside services and burial were held April 29 at Center Grove Cemetery near Westboro, Missouri, for Walter Ross of Trenton, New Jersey, formerly of Tarkio. Walter was a journeyman electrician for over 50 years who supervised some of the country’s most important construction projects, such as the Alcan Highway in Alaska, the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the BOMARC Missile Project in Fort Dix, New Jersey, the World Trade Center in New York City, and the Lincoln Center in New York City.

• Over 900 high school athletes competed in the Indian Relays at Tarkio High School April 29 at Kyle Field.
