May 11, 1950

• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “The Great Lover” with Bob Hope and Rhonda Fleming, and “That Midnight Kiss” starring Kathryn Grayson, Jose Iturbi, and Keenan Wynn.

• Friday’s storm tore a section of roof off the northeast part of the Fairfax public school building. Many other roofs in town were also damaged.

• Paul Hill, bus driver who operated Burlington busses through Fairfax the past few years, is missing in the Nebraska flood. Mr. Hill was driver of the bus that passed through Fairfax at 4:45 p.m. Monday. It was caught in the flash flood at Unadilla and Mr. Hill and three passengers are yet unaccounted for.

• Twenty-one seniors were awarded their diplomas at the 55th annual commencement of the Fairfax High School held at the high school auditorium Wednesday. Rev. Monk Bryant, pastor of the Maryville Methodist Church, delivered the commencement address.

May 15, 1975

• Greg Wennihan and Pam Shaw were crowned king and queen of the 1975 junior/senior prom held May 2 at Fairfax High School.

• Mrs. Lucy Massie is retiring at the close of this semester, ending a 36-year career in the teaching field. She has spent the past 25 years at Fairfax R-3.

• Margaret Martin has offered to share an old-time recipe for rhubarb pie, which she said Letha Umbarger gave her: 3 cups rhubarb, cut in unbaked 9-inch pie shell; mix 1 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, 1 cup heavy cream and pour over rhubarb; beat 2 eggs well with a dash of salt and pour over top (nutmeg or cinnamon can be sprinkled over top if desired); bake in 450ºF oven for 10 minutes, reduce heat and continue baking for 30 minutes.

• On Friday, May 5, Mary Anne Pennel, Darlene Smith, Nancy Gaines, and Connie Dunkle planted flowers in the 14 flower barrels on Main Street in Fairfax, courtesy of the Fairfax Community Betterment. They also planted the flower boxes around the water fountain at the city park. The Fairfax National Honor Society members put Miracle-Gro on each box as a service project.

• The Fairfax High School business technology class is constructing webpages for local Fairfax businesses. The web pages will be linked to the Fairfax school website. Fairfax businesses involved are Rays’ Dairy Diner, The Mane Thing, Community for Kids Preschool, Fairfax Forum, K G Buds, Burke and Sons Lumber, Koop’s Karpentry, Lonnie’s Hair Barn, Bear’s Den, MFA Agri Service, Speedy’s, Simmons MFA, Mid-Prairie Products, Fertilizer Service, Methodist Church, and Christian Church.

• The first grade students at Fairfax R-3 saw first hand how mallard ducks are born when the duck eggs began to hatch. The class began with 27 eggs that they received from a farm in Iowa and 23 hatched.

• James and Kallie Schoonover of Fairfax competed at the 14th annual Optimist Youth Track Meet in Rock Port May 6. Kallie set a new meet record in the 100 meter dash for 9 and 10 year-old girls. She took 1st with a time of 14.62. She also took 1st in the same age group for the girls’ 200 meter dash and girls’ standing long jump. James placed 5th in the 7 and 8 year-old boys’ 100 meter dash and 6th in the 7 and 8 year old boys’ softball throw.

• Fairfax Crane Service recently placed a golf cart on top of a tank at Fertilizer Service in Fairfax just for the fun of it and it has been the talk of the town ever since.
