• A heavy hailstorm devastated the area from Phelps City northeast to a point northwest of Westboro late Saturday afternoon. Hail to a depth of several feet piled up in the vicinity of the old Martin Bickel home northeast of Rock Port. The hailstones drifted in places as high as four to five feet deep immediately after the storm, with a depth of 29 inches still in evidence Sunday morning. Livestock and chickens were killed, crops and gardens beat into the ground, and property damaged.
• John Knierim, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Knierim, has been chosen by the Community Club as its representative at Boys’ State in June.
• Mr. and Mrs. Harold Zach and their children, Karen, Nancy, and Richard, have been selected as Family of the Week. The Zach family lives on Highway No. 4 west of Rock Port and a short distance east of Phelps City. Operating 700 acres, Mr. Zach devotes most of his acreage to wheat and corn.
• Lee Vogel Implement in Rock Port advertised an Allis-Chalmers Model B tractor for $985. The starter, lights and 9-24 tires are standard equipment, and the husky 125-cu. in. A-C engine combined with torque tube design provides more useful power at the drawbar.
May 22, 1975
• Rock Port is experiencing an outbreak of measles. Around 50 cases have been reported according to Miss Claudine Supernaw, county health nurse.
• Janette Wessler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul H. Wessler, Westboro, has been selected as one of the top 50 men and women on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus to represent the sophomore class in Sigma Rho Sigma.
• A Rock Port policeman was injured and a city patrol car demolished in a wild chase involving a stolen vehicle and three youths, runaways from the Powell School for Boys and Girls, Red Oak, Iowa. Pursuit of the youths began May 14 in Shenandoah, Iowa, and ended in Rock Port shortly after midnight May 15.
• Barry Minter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guss Minter, Jr., is the first Rock Port athlete since 1959 to letter in all three sports (football, basketball, and track) for four years. Kenton Krusor was the last athlete recorded in Rock Port history who earned 12 letters in his four years of high school.

• C.L. Squires has announced his retirement after 35 years as a Shelter Insurance agent. Jerry LeFever, manager of the True Value store in Rock Port, has been appointed as the Shelter Insurance representative for Rock Port and Atchison County.
• The Rock Port High School Class of 2000 graduated May 14, 2000. Kate Griffin was the valedictorian and Ryan Hance was salutatorian.
• The Rock Port varsity golfers placed second at districts May 8, qualifying the team for state competition. Placing individually in the top 10 were Kalen Smith with a score of 82, Jay Hunter with an 85, and Nate Bunton with an 86. Other golfers qualifying were Bryan Carey with an 89 and Curt Graham with a 101.
• Shannon Shineman and Reid Hunter, Rock Port, received the State FFA Degree, the highest degree members can receive at the state level.
• The Rock Port girls’ and boys’ track teams competed at the district track meet Saturday, May 13. Each team placed second.
