June 2, 1950

• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “Panhandle” with Rod Cameron and Cathy Downs, “Sand” with Mark Stevens and Coleen Gray, and “Song of Surrender” with Wanda Hendrix, Claude Rains, and Macdonald Carey.

• Don Hanson of California has been employed as instructor in social science, history, and physical education, as well as a football coach in the Fairfax High School. He is 24 years old, single, and served in the Navy during WWII.

• The body of Paul N. Hill, Burlington bus driver who had operated a bus through Fairfax for about seven years, was found in the Little Nemaha River eight miles south of Nemaha, Nebraska, Friday. Mr. Hill had been missing since May 8 when a flash flood swept his bus from the highway.

June 5, 1975

• Mrs. Jurine Straub has made the Americana Eagle quilt for the Community Hospital Auxiliary to raffle at the Community Fair in Fairfax June 19-21. This is a copy of one hanging in the Smithsonian Institute. Mrs. DeLora Stoner has crocheted the Living Rose afghan, which will also go to one lucky winner.

• The Atchison-Holt Ambulance District has five new van-type ambulances stationed at Westboro, Rock Port, Fairfax, Bellevue, and Oregon, and with the exception of the Fairfax location, are operated by volunteer groups. Technicians are taking a 24-week course at Tarkio Methodist Church weekly and when complete will be certified by the state.

• The pretty lawn of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Thomson has been named Lawn of the Month for June. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Alldredge, in the same neighborhood, received honorable mention.

June 1, 2000

• The top five point earners in the accelerated reading program at Fairfax R-3 were interviewed by KMA radio in Shenandoah, Iowa, on Tuesday morning, May 23. The students were Shelby Zirfas, Tayne Thompson, Kaylyn Sly, Becky Pickard, and Samantha Silkett.

• Fairfax residents are asked to refrain from watering lawns until further notice due to the lack of moisture in the area.

• A tree in the yard of the Mr. and Mrs. Rick Sons residence was struck by lightning Friday, May 26, and the falling tree did damage to the roof of the home.

• Elsie O’Riley of Fairfax has retired as teachers’ aide from the Fairfax R-3 School District. She has been an aide for the past five years and taught private kindergarten in area churches beginning in 1955 until the students eventually moved into the school building.

• The Fairfax Library received new windows. Musch Carpentry did the work.
