• The average citizen of Atchison County does not know or realize that Atchison County’s section of the Missouri River flood plan is costing $5,500,000. The work is now underway, with seven contracts now in process of being fulfilled.

• Rob Roy Greenley graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, on June 2nd with a second lieutenant’s commission in the Air Force.

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre: “Prince of Plains,” “Chinatown at Midnight,” “Paid In Full” with Robert Cummings and Lizabeth Scott, and “And Baby Makes Three” with Robert Young and Barbara Hale.

• A car accident in Nebraska took the lives of two people who were heading to Rock Port from Utah. Orval Rupe of Ogden, Utah, was heading to Missouri on his first trip to Rock Port since he left here 46 years ago when the car he was driving skidded on oil on the road and crashed. He was killed instantly and his wife later succumbed to injuries. A son survived.

• The Kansas City Monarchs and Memphis Red Sox will face off at the Rock Port Memorial Park baseball field Monday, June 5. This is a regular scheduled league game, not an exhibition. Admission is $1 plus tax and 50¢ plus tax. The Monarchs have five starting pitchers and have yet to call a reliever.

May 29, 1975

• Dean Lane, Rock Port City Marshal, almost had his eye put out by a gunshot in a training session May 22. Due to storm clouds moving in, the training session turned dark and when Lane entered the building to call the training off, one of the people playing a bandit fired from about three feet away with a 12 gauge shotgun. The wadding hit Lane just above the right eyebrow and embedded black gunpowder on the right side of his face. His glasses saved him from blindness.

• Showing at Paramount Theatre: “Trip With The Teacher” and “Rancho Deluxe.”

• Mr. and Mrs. Clifford E. Hill of Rock Port celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary May 25. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Vette, who were guests at the event, also celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary that day.

• Cadet Gary Lee Staples, son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Staples of Rock Port, will graduate June 1 from the Wentworth Military Academy, Lexington.

• Jim Lewis was honored for his 25 years of service to the Rock Port Fire Department.

• Mrs. Margi Mobley was named the Rock Port Elementary Teacher of the Year. Three teachers are retiring: Mrs. Mulvania, 19 years of teaching FACS; Mrs. Mobley, 14 years of teaching second grade; and Mr. Eickhoff, 27 years teaching and coaching.

• The Rock Port boys’ golf team competed at the state golf tournament May 15-16. The Rock Port team finished sixth out of 16 teams.

• The Rock Port Market advertised Memorial Day Savings: 10 lb. Shurfine charcoal briquets, $2.19, and t-bone steaks, $4.99 per pound.

• The Rock Port Blue Jays competed at the 2000 MSHSAA Track and Field Championships May 19 and 20 in Jefferson City. State champions are Terra Robison in the long jump and Jordan Shrader in the pole vault. Other results are: 400 meter relay (Jared Meyerkorth, Brent Dahlin, Jordan Shrader, and Josh Meinders), second place; Jared Meyerkorth, third in the 800 meter run; Terra Robison, sixth in the triple jump; Kate Griffin, sixth in the pole vault; 4×100 meter relay (Anne Reynolds, Tawni Gebhards, Terra Robison and Melanie Moore), sixth place; Josh Meinders, sixth in the 200 meter dash; 4×400 meter relay (Anne Reynolds, Terra Robison, Taya Moore, and Melanie Moore), seventh place; and Brandon Makings, 12th in the discus.
