June 9, 1950

• James Edward Rhoades, age 2, drowned in two feet of water inside a stock tank Wednesday evening at the Ray Marquart farm near Westboro. The boy was playing in the yard when he must have wandered into the barn lot where the tank was located. A gate was wired shut, but he was able to fit through.

• More than 200 guests registered Saturday at the flower show in the lobby of the Walnut Inn. Sponsored by the Tarkio Women’s Club, the show saw 23 blue ribbons awarded.

• Graveside services for Earl E. Berg, former Tarkio resident, were held Saturday at Home Cemetery. Mr. Berg, 51, was born in Tarkio and on June 2, 1917, at the age of 18, enlisted in Co. A. Fourth Missouri Infantry. He served overseas in WWI and took part in the Wesserling sector and in the St. Mihiel and Argonne Meuse offensives. He was wounded in the Argonne forest on September 29, 1918, and was later awarded the Purple Heart.

• Tarkio walloped Fairfax 23 to 2 here Wednesday night, scoring in every inning but the first and eighth. This puts Tarkio and Farragut, Iowa, as the only two undefeated teams in the IAMO league.

• Safety Federal Savings and Loan proudly announces the opening of its new location in Tarkio at the corner of 4th and Elm. The office will be managed by Mr. Jim Allen, who is assisted by Linda Jackson.

• Camp Walnut Day Camp for Girl Scouts of Fairfax, Rock Port, Tarkio, and Westboro was held June 2-6 at the Tarkio Community Building and park. Seventy-three girls were in attendance. Activities included swimming at the college, cookouts at Charity Lake and Centerview Fishing Lake, arts, crafts, and learning camping skills. The girls were shown a collection of Indian relics owned by Mrs. Jean Enos and were entertained with Mic-O-Say costumes and dances performed by the Senior Boy Scouts.

• Cultural arts and crafts by Northwest Missouri women will be on display June 7-27 at the Farmers and Valley Bank in Tarkio. The exhibit, sponsored by the Atchison County Extension Homemaker’s Council, will include original artwork in painting or drawing, sculpture, ceramics, stitchery, and creative crafts.

• Integrated Health Services celebrated National Nursing Home Week May 14-20. Alva Barnett and his band entertained a large crowd with his country western, blue grass, and gospel music. Millie Smith was crowned Ms. IHS. Donna and Marvin Smith entertained residents and staff with musical talents. The annual 10-foot banana split was enjoyed by many.

• Sara Clark and Duane Lester are engaged to be married on June 17 at the Tarkio United Methodist Church.

•The Morning Sun Friendship Club met at Gerry Tohill’s home on May 16. Betty Jo Lewis, public affairs manager out of the Sprint office in Kansas City, was the guest speaker.

• The annual PEO Luncheon and Style Show was held Saturday, June 3, in Tarkio. The event took place in the home of Mary and Ralph Hackett.
