• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “Challenge to Lassie,” “On The Town” with Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Betty Garrett, and “The Big Cat.”
• J. Frank Waugh, M.D., who in his early life in the Fairfax community attended the old Evening Star rural school and Fairfax public schools, is now a well-known dermatologist of Chicago, Illinois. He is preparing to retire from active professional work.
• “Make Father’s Day A Big Success!” by shopping at Sly Hardware in Fairfax. Specials include: combination pliers, 29¢; Sunbeam electric shavemaster, $24.50; Stanley bottle, $8.95; Black & Decker home utility electric drill, $18.95; and Town and Country tool outfit, $44.95.
• A rifle, lawn mowers, furniture, stoves, tools, and other items were auctioned off at the Kiwanis Sale Auction Saturday afternoon. “Col.” Hank Oswald was the auctioneer. The sale proceeds totaled $52.

• Miss Fairfax candidates are Joyce Graves, Christine Gomel, Mary Hawkins, Evetta Adams, Dawn Ilsley, Cindy Moses, Terry Miller, Jan Norton, and Mary Ann Scarlett. The queen will be chosen in ceremonies held Thursday evening, June 19.
• “When you awaken on the morning of your 100th birthday, you take a few moments to reflect, to thank God, and to maybe reassess your personal place in the scheme of things. I thought that I would demonstrate that I was still the master of my physical self, so I got down on the floor and did 12 push-ups instead of the usual seven.” Thus began the 101st year of the life of William Ira Ferguson (a resident at Northview Manor in Tarkio) which began June 6, 1875, on a farm near Roanoke, Missouri. The original deed is signed by President James Monroe. William taught college mathematics, astrology, philosophy, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and German.
• The Fairfax Community Garden Club held its June 10 meeting at the Exchange Bank Community Room. A workshop on working with flowers was presented. Several interested and unusual arrangements were made from many materials, including weeds, blanched bones, flowers, an old boot, and rocks.

• Three children of the St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Tarkio received their First Communion on Sunday, May 14. They are Jessica Salmond and Daniel Umbarger, both of Fairfax, and Rachel Young of Rock Port.
• A former Fairfax resident and his wife were the talk of the town when they drove through Fairfax this week. Tony and Barbara Harmon of Colville, Washington, are traveling all over the United States in a pickup and camper. Tony built the camper with wood siding and made and installed a stained glass window in the camper door. He painted the pickup blue with white clouds.
• Ezra Carpenter, grandson of Richard and Peggy Slemons of Fairfax, is featured in the illustration for the story “Rosie and Me” in the June 2000 issue of Country Home Magazine.
