The Brownville Village Theatre (BVT) celebrates its 58th season this summer.

BVT is proud to produce four plays and one musical, running June 6 through August 10. One of Nebraska’s oldest repertory theatres, the Brownville Village Theatre is a true repertory theatre, rehearsing and performing shows simultaneously, and never performing the same show back-to-back.

The Brownville Village Theatre takes pride in producing a variety of shows in repertory. This summer, the season includes String, from a book by Sarah Hammond with music and lyrics by Adam Gwon; Jake’s Women by Neil Simon; Drinking Habit 2: Caught in the Act by Tom Smith; For the Protection of Girls by Rachel Kay Curtiss; and The BFG (Big Friendly Giant) by Roald Dahl and adapted by David Wood.

String

When The Fates are banished to Earth, they find the human world mundane. After spending centuries spinning, measuring, and cutting the strings of every living soul, the trio’s world is shaken after a pair of missing scissors turns into a romance that could alter life as we know it. This comedy musical takes us on a journey through love and loss and the beautiful tapestry that is life.

Jake’s Women

Written by seminal playwright Neil Simon comes a comedy featuring a man named Jake and the women in his life. Jake, a writer, finds himself stuck – struggling with work, questioning his marriage, the meaning of family, and battling psychosis. The classic tale of a writer grappling with reality and fiction and the variety of characters surrounding him.

Drinking Habits 2 – Caught in the Act

Drinking Habits 2 – Caught in the Act will open on Friday, June 20. Return this summer to the convent of the Sisters of Perpetual sewing, this time to save an orphanage. Last year’s family affair returns to the stage (literally) as the troupe decides the best way to raise the funds is to put on a play, and maybe make some secret wine as well. Drinking Habits 2: Caught in the Act is a ridiculously silly good time farce full of hilarity and mishaps and is fun for the whole family.

For the Protection of Girls

The drama for the summer is For the Protection of Girls. Meet three of America’s “bad girls.” Follow these iconic apparitions as they take you on a ghostly trip casting a light into the shadows of our dark history, joining them in their glories, challenges, and transformation. A world premiere play written by BVT’s Resident Playwright, it will leave you wondering what haunting herstory was left out of your history books. The show begins on July 3.

The final show of summer repertory is the family friendly The BFG (Big Friendly Giant). A little girl is celebrating her birthday and decides she wants to utilize her dad, mom, and friends to act out her favorite book – The BFG, the Big Friendly Giant. Together they tell the story through imagination and puppetry. Based on the Roald Dahl book, The BFG is a play for young audiences about accepting people for who they are, the importance of friendships, and the power of dreams. The perfect show for kids and the young at heart. The show will debut on the 4th of July at 3:00 p.m.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for students 18 years old and under. BVT also offers a $15 ticket rate for groups of 10 or more. Season flex tickets for five admissions are available for $80 and are only available by calling the box office at 402-825-4121.

BVT brings in a small talented cast from all over the United States to perform, build, and create its productions. It is a uniquely fun experience to see a show at the Brownville Village Theatre surrounded by deep history and tradition.

The theatre’s home is over a century old and was formerly the Brownville Christian Church. Annually, the theatre brings over 3,000 audience members locally and throughout the Midwest to Brownville.

The artistic directors for the theatre are Mitch Bean and Rachel Curtiss, a husband-and-wife duo who are committed to the tradition and growth of the Brownville Village Theatre. Both have been with BVT for some time having begun as members of the company since 2012.

The 58th season for the Brownville Village Theatre is sponsored this year by the Community Insurance Group and by the State Bank of Table Rock with offices in Table Rock, DuBois, Pawnee City, Humboldt, Roca, and Tecumseh.
