June 16, 1950
• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby” with Don O’Connor and Gloria deHaven.
• A three-room house on Ranch 11 some five miles north of Fairfax was destroyed by a fire of unknown origin on Sunday. The ranch is owned by Mrs. Esther Giffin of Washington, D.C., but is operated by Don Hurst. The house that burned was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Bill Linthicum, who were away at the time of the fire.
• Larry Eugene, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Wake, born May 28, is still in the incubator at the Fairfax Community Hospital. He now weighs three and one-half pounds and is making steady gains.
• There are now six new homes under construction in Fairfax. Everett Wake is building a new home just east of his present one. Francis Irvine has the roof and most of the siding on his new home across the street from his present residence. C.P. Kincanon is building a small house just west of the one he sold last fall. Hayden Pyeatt has the basement walls up and part of the framework on his house west of the new Jess Bowman home. Glen Carson has the foundation in and part of the sub-floor for his new home across the street west of his current one. Construction on Mr. and Mrs. Earle E. Sims’ five-room home has also begun.
June 19, 1975
• Wednesday of last week, hail cut a path of crop destruction east and south of Fairfax. This week, severe thunderstorms struck Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, accompanied by high winds and reported tornado funnels, causing considerable damage. An ancient maple tree in the Fairfax City Park was also toppled by the storm.
• Harold Gray of Craig brought in a photo received from an acquaintance at Sterling, Colorado, depicting a startling phenomenon. It was snapped of the tornado cloud and when printed revealed a sacred image hovering in the air on the right. No trick photography entered into the visible results.
• Bids on the final seven miles of Interstate 29 have been approved by the Missouri State Highway Commission. The work is located from the Atchison County line southeast to Craig.
June 15, 2000
• Vernon Rhoades of Fairfax received Missouri Master Angler Awards for four bass he caught this spring in a farm pond in Atchison County. Two weighed over eight pounds, one weighed over seven pounds, and the other weighed six pounds.
• The City of Fairfax is looking at a water shortage that is reaching crisis level and is keeping fingers crossed that the city will receive a grant that would provide funds for a new water well and new water tower. At this time of year, with normal rain fall, the city’s one and only water well is usually at 14 to 18 feet with the pump running. The current water level is averaging 4 1/2 feet with the pump running.
• Gary and Debbie Kay (Hecker) Johnson will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary June 21. They were married on that day in 1975 at the First Christian Church in Rock Port by Rev. Jan Weston.
