June 16, 1950
• Early Friday morning, Rock Port firemen were called to a hay barn fire caused by a lightning strike at the farm of George Lichte, who lives one mile north of Corning. Ten tons of baled hay, 60 bushels of corn, and some harnesses were destroyed, but the corncrib, garage, and implement shed were saved.
• Raymond Smith of Linden left Tuesday evening for San Jose, California, to take up his studies for the ministry. He made the decision to become a minister his freshman year of high school and has worked toward that goal ever since. He graduated in May from Rock Port High School.
• Twin boys were born Monday evening about 10:30 to Mr. and Mrs. Conley Bennington at the Hamburg hospital. They weighed about six and four pounds respectively. They have not been named yet, but are doing well, along with their mother.
• Tragedy struck at the Elmer Morgan home southwest of Fairfax last Monday, June 12. Mr. Morgan was plowing corn in one of his fields that morning when the tractor tipped over onto him and crushed him to death. He was not found until 6:30 p.m. that evening when men delivering gasoline to the home saw the upset machine and went to investigate and discovered Mr. Morgan.

• Specials at Hy-Klas Food Stores and Locker Service in Rock Port include: fresh dressed frying chickens packed in cracked ice, 59¢ per pound; barbecued ribs with sauce, 79¢ per pound; farm style bread with 16% more flour, 14¢; and Kool Aid (all flavors), 3 packages for 13¢.

• New steps and sidewalk are being installed at the Memorial Building in Rock Port. The steps and walk have been crumbling the past few years and posed a serious hazard to pedestrians.
• Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Greiner, music teacher at the Rock Port school, purchased at public auction the school’s carpentry class house, located at 504 Parkeast Drive in Rock Port, for $22,000. The home features a 1,104 square foot living area with three bedrooms, a full basement, central gas heat, a built-in kitchen with garbage disposal plus wall-to-wall carpeting.
• Mr. and Mrs. Homer Estus of Rock Port will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house at the Coach House Saturday, June 21. All seven of their children and their families will be home to attend the celebration, making this the first time the entire family has been together in over 40 years.

• Brothers Bill and Mark Brandon and their young apprentice, Seth Showalter, put the finishing touches on before getting ready to move the house owned by W.C. and Shauna Farmer and located at 800 South Main to its new address of 405 Valley View Drive.
• Chats: “The city’s storm drains and resurfacing with concrete are getting the whole town involved. Raymond Henagen reports that the Rock Port Telephone employees have spent many unscheduled man hours repairing cut cables and replacing cable in that area. He estimates that $45,000 unbudgeted dollars have been spent on the project, which will benefit the whole community in the long run, but will certainly affect the short term profitability.”
