• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “The Dude Goes West” with Eddie Albert and Gale Storm and “Ambush” with Robert Taylor, John Hodiak, and Arlene Dahl.

• Juanita Howell, one of the world’s best trick riders, is coming to the 4-State Roundup next week.

• E.R. McMahon, pioneer Fairfax business man and well-known citizen, passed away July 9 at the age of 81 years. In 1870, the McMahon family came to Tarkio and located on a farm one mile west of the present Central School. In 1892, the new town of Fairfax attracted Edward’s attention and he moved there to start his business. First he engaged in blacksmithing and then moved on to hardware and implements, owning and operating McMahon Hardware and Implement Company. He served on the Fairfax school board for 30 years, was mayor for two terms, served 50 years in the Masonic Lodge, was chairman of the Atchison County Red Cross, and longtime member of the Methodist Church.

July 17, 1975

• Everette R. Howard, 71, of Corning, Missouri, was found deceased Friday, July 11, on the bank of the Missouri River between Corning and Craig, where he had been fishing. The death was the result of a heart attack. Mr. Howard was a retired farmer.

• Jim Fisher and J.W. Hawkins, hardware merchant and plumber, flew to Walnut Creek, California, Tuesday to install a windmill. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jones were visiting in Missouri last summer and decided they wanted a windmill at their California home, but there was no dealer in that area for equipment nor workmen who knew how to erect one.

• A new film, “In the Presence of Mine Enemies,” the compelling story of ex-prisoner of war Captain Howard E. Rutledge, will be shown July 20 in the city park in Fairfax. Captain Rutledge was a prisoner of the North Vietnamese for seven years in the “Hanoi Hilton” after his fighter plane was downed November 27, 1965.

• W.L. “Dub” Harrington was honored July 10 by members of the Fairfax Volunteer Fire Department for his 38-year tenure with the department, much of that time spent as chief. He was presented with an inscribed gold pocket watch and his fire hat mounted on an engraved plaque.

• Mr. and Mrs. Richard Thiesfeld left July 12 for a six-day trip to England. The group will be visiting rural areas around London.

• The Aid Association for Lutherans of Rock Port held a rummage sale a few months ago and raised $700, which they chose to spend in a “healthy” manner. They gave those funds to Community Hospital Auxiliary to offset the cost of a new Performa Knee CPM (continuous passive motion) machine. The machine’s purpose is for rehabilitation for knee problems or following knee surgeries.

• Three Fairfax High School students attended Girls’ State this year. Lexi Ballinger was chosen as State Representative from Cockrill City, LeAnn Graves was State Representative of Lewis City, and Holly Clement was Clark City Police Judge and Clark City State Senator.

• Fairfax Community Betterment donated a bench to Community for Kids Preschool to be placed in front of the building on Main Street in Fairfax.
