July 14, 1950
• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Holiday Inn” with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire and “Angels With Dirty Faces.”
• A fire alarm was sent in from the Top Kick highway cafe just west of town on No. 275 last Friday afternoon when an electric fryer caught fire from grease. A hole was burned in the ceiling and a window frame. The building belongs to George Opp and is leased by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Sawyers.
• One interesting thing that stands out in the figures of the 1950 assessment recently completed by Atchison County Assessor Harry Alexander is that automobiles in the county far outnumber the horses and mules. The current assessment shows there are 3,107 motor vehicles – which includes trucks, airplanes, motorcycles, and cars (assessed at $911,500) – and 683 horses and mules (assessed at $13,280).
• Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Smith of Langdon received a letter from their son, Cpl. Jack D. Smith, written from Kohura, Japan, telling them that he was headed to Korea. Cpl. Smith is with headquarters company of the 24th Medical Battalion.
July 10, 1975
• Sue Schomburg, a 16-year-old member of the Rock Port swim team, recently swam almost five miles (250 laps) in the Rock Port Municipal Pool. Citizens Bank & Trust sponsored Sue’s swim at 60¢ per lap for the swim team trophies, medals, and ribbons. Sue was presented a check for $150.
• A near casualty occurred July 4 during the annual fireworks display given by the Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department. Gene Lininger was thrown back four feet sustaining bruises on the left thigh and was knocked out for a couple of minutes when a nine-inch bomb failed to take off and exploded in the iron mortar buried in the ground. The explosion completely demolished the protective barricade made of two 2”x12’ planks. The iron mortar, 3” in diameter, 16” tall and 1/4” thick, had no seams, but was flattened out like a smooth board. Several pieces of shrapnel went flying through the air, one of which traveled over 200 yards up the hill toward the clubhouse.
• Three underground cables at the Rock Port municipal power plant burned Saturday leaving the city in the dark for 45 minutes.
July 6, 2000
• Rock Port Telephone Company celebrated its 35th anniversary with an open house June 29. Over 500 customers were served lunch by the staff and board members and over 200 won prizes.
• The Rock Port High School cheerleaders hosted a cheerleading camp for Rock Port Elementary students June 26-30 at the Rock Port City Park.
• This week’s business features are Minter Funeral Chapel, Raines Title Company, LLC, and Citizens Bank & Trust. Minter Funeral Chapel has been in business for 35 years and Raines and CB&T for over 100 years each.
• Thirty couples tied the knot during the latter part of May and the month of June according to Atchison County Circuit Clerk Gordon Clifton.
• The proposed site of the Atchison County Health Center is at the corner of Main and 5th Street in Tarkio, where the Buthe Oil Company currently stands. The service station is not in use.
