August 4, 1950

• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “Miss Mink of 1919,” “Shadows Of The West,” and “That Wonderful Urge” with Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney.

• Gatemen who saw all the cars that entered the 4-State Roundup Rodeo in Fairfax the week before last kept count of the cars from other states and reported seeing 25 different ones. One driver was from the very northwest corner of Washington.

• More than 200 prospective young baseball stars are expected to participate in tryouts conducted by the Blues and Yankees August 8-10 in Kansas City at Blue Stadium. Outstanding prospects during the tryouts will be offered contracts through the Yankee organization.

• Seven-year-old Lawrence Elmer Oslin, Jr., of Skidmore, Missouri, was crushed by a truck wheel and killed Saturday evening when he fell out of the cab of a truck driven by his father. The entire family had driven to Humboldt, Nebraska, that day to get a load of feed and was making some deliveries and was on the road near the Cline Hawkins’ place two miles outside of Dotham, Missouri. Even though they were driving slow, the door must have popped open and young Lawrence fell out, although the door was closed when the family noticed him missing.

August 7, 1975

• Kansas City’s Worlds of Fun hosted the largest crowd in the theme park’s two and a half year history Saturday, August 2. The record gathering of 19,094 people surpassed the previous record of 16,956. Blood, Sweat & Tears with David Clayton Thomas provided concert entertainment for the record crowd.

• “The Sounds of Love” will be shown at the Fairfax City Park on August 10, sponsored by the Fairfax Ministerial Alliance. This new color documentary features the real Maria Von Trapp, as well as movie actress Dale Evans, who was married to cowboy actor Roy Rogers, and Corrie Ten Boom, who during WWII was condemned to death by the Nazis for aiding the Jews of Holland to escape capture.

• August Lawn of the Month recognition went to Mrs. Edith Carter. In spite of the hot, dry weather, her trim yard and garden are exceptionally attractive. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kemerling received honorable mention.

August 3, 2000

• This year’s Fairfax Fair theme will be “Fairfax Under the Big Top.” This year’s queen contestants are: Junior Miss Fairfax – Sarah Scarbrough, Jessica Wiley, Sarah Johnson, Ashley Gomel, Alyssa Wiley, Andrea Ilsley, Jessica Koop, Ashley Million, and Jaymee Chastain; and Miss Fairfax – Emily Seymour, Casondra Morton, Megan O’Riley, Tabitha Taylor, Lexi Ballinger, Jenea’ Kemerling, Crystal Beck, Kara Kemerling, Katy Hunter, Ashley Grossman, Briana Umbarger, and Jamie Whittington.

• Atchison County Conservation Agent Richard Sperber released a fishing report for the county. Some of the information included: Missouri River – Channel catfish are biting good on crayfish, minnows, and a variety of stink baits and carp are biting on worms; Tarkio River – catfish are biting on crayfish and minnows and carp on worms and sweet corn; and Nishnabotna River – fishing for channel catfish has been poor, but carp are biting good on worms.

• Nikita Gladman posed for a photo with the family’s big cucumber that grew in the garden this summer. It weighed 2.89 pounds.
