• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port – “Beyond Purple Hills” with Gene Autry, “Undertow,” “Captain Carey, U.S.A.” with Alan Ladd, “Arctic Fury,” and “Savage Splendor.”

• Rock Port Hardware is selling sets of eight aluminum tumblers in everlasting jewel tones for $4.95.

• Specials at Lee Pemberton & Sons Hy-Klas Food Stores and Locker Service in Rock Port include: Swift’s select blade cuts of beef roast, 57¢ per pound; Whiting fish, 29¢ for 2 pounds; Armour’s boneless pork cutlets, 67¢ per pound; and homogenized or pasteurized milk, quart paper carton for 15¢.

• Work has begun on the alteration and modernizing of the fronts of the Lewis buildings, occupied by the Fentiman Barbershop and the office of the Production and Marketing Association.

• Members of the Simpson clan to the number of 100 or more gathered at Waubonsie state park near Hamburg last Sunday for a reunion and picnic dinner. The matriarch of the group, Mrs. Susan Herron, aged 84, was present as the last remaining member of the original Simpson family.

July 31, 1975

• Judges of the Atchison County Court and County Engineer Darrell Jones were in Decator, Illinois, visiting the Caterpillar Manufacturing Company to look at motor graders. Judges Greg Chamberlain, Fred Daugherty, and Hal Davis, plus Jones, were taken to Illinois by chartered plane by Bob Woods of Dean Machinery, Maryville.

• The paving contract on I-29 is nearly half complete with Clarkson Construction of Kansas City making phenomenal progress, averaging almost a mile a day with 10.28 miles completed in 11 working days. There is a total of 23 miles of paving.

• “Benji” – America’s new, most-huggable hero – is playing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port.

• Harmon-Stephens Electronics in Rock Port is advertising a General Electric AM/FM stereo receiver, 8-track cartridge tape player and matched speaker system on sale for $119.95.

• Fran Schwenk, football coach, is working on improvements for field events for next spring’s track team at Blue Jay Stadium. The pole vault track, long jump track, and semi-circular take-off area for the high jump are being dug out six inches and then four inches of concrete will be poured and topped with 1 1/2 inches of asphalt.

July 27, 2000

• The Rock Port Fire Department station received a new awning thanks to Scott Jones and Dan Athen, and the watchful eye of Chief Harold Perry.

• Robert and Margaret Phelps will observe their 50th wedding anniversary August 4. They were married on that day in 1950 at Chamberlain Wedding Chapel in Rock Port by Rev. Houser Wentus, Methodist Church pastor. Robert is a veteran of the Korean War and is retired from Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative. Margaret is a retired teacher.

• The Rock Port High School Class of 1970 celebrated its 30th reunion Saturday, July 1. Everyone was invited to play golf that morning, then enjoy a picnic in the city park. Dinner was served at the Country Club with a DJ and they also played “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” (Class of 1970 style with questions pertaining to school history, class history, and other trivia).
