• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Big Wheel” with Mickey Rooney and “No Man Of Her Own” with Barbara Stanwyck and John Lund.
• Jimmy Slemp, youthful golfer of Rock Port, won a teenage golf tournament in Albany, Missouri, July 30. On the par 33 course, he shot three rounds – 36, 35, and 37. To add to his Albany conquest, he returned to that course on August 6 and won the A flight in a tournament with men of mature years and long golfing experience. His scores on that day were 34, 36, and 36.
• Because of an estimate of a million and one-half bushels of 1949 corn to be delivered in the northwest counties of Missouri, the state office of the PMA has advised the local office that Atchison County has been allotted 60 more grain bins. Thirty-five will be located at the site of present bins north of Rock Port and 25 will be located at Westboro.
• The featured Family of the Week is the Tiemann family. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Tiemann and one-year-old son, Duane, live northwest of Westboro. Mr. Tiemann, 25, operates a 300 acre farm concentrated mostly on corn, wheat, oats, and alfalfa. He is also an accomplished pipe organist and has a movie photography hobby.

• Mr. and Mrs. Bill Struthers will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary August 10. A reception will be held in their honor at the Rock Port Christian Church.
• A cookout was held out by the Nishna River on Sunday. About 20 to 25 people attending the cookout went up the river around four or five miles then floated back down on their innertubes.
• Robert Resler was dismissed from the Fairfax hospital last Monday after spending 10 days there for treatment following an accident at work on I-29. A paving machine ran over his foot, cracking a bone and damaging tissue.
• The drought situation is getting severe on late maturing corn and also late planted corn in Atchison County. Some corn looks good, but other acres look like there will be a 25-50% yield loss.
• Sue Knierim of Rock Port was crowned Sidney, Iowa, Rodeo Queen Tuesday evening. Sixteen girls participated in the contest. Miss Knierim was also chosen as Miss Rodeo Iowa and will represent Iowa in the Rodeo Cowboy Association Nationals in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in December.

• Bob and Marilyn Chapple were the parade grand marshals for the Atchison County Fair Parade.
• One of the oldest trees in Rock Port, measuring 21 feet around and 7 to 8 feet in diameter, was cut down by the Greenwade Tree Service of Auburn, Nebraska, July 27. The tree was located on College Street in front of Charlie and Cheryl Zabel’s home.
• The Rock Port Market’s Back-to-School Blowout included the following specials: fresh pork tenderloin, $3.39 per pound; whole fresh frozen chickens, 79¢ per pound; California red seedless grapes, 99¢ per pound; and General Mills 12-18 ounce cereal, 2 for $4.
• Chamberlain Funeral Home & Monuments, Rock Port, is a featured business this week. The funeral home is owned by Greg and Betty Chamberlain and managed by Eric and Lynn Chamberlain. Chamberlain Funeral Home & Monuments has been in the industry for 36 years.
