• The Old-Timers of Atchison County have picked Tuesday, August 22, for their annual baseball game between the east and west sides of the county. Newcomer Olin Fehrman will be pitching for Rock Port. Langdon’s Percy and Stanford and Watson’s Gaines and Murry are working out for the big game. Rock Port will also feature heavy-hitters Nixon, Cook, and Fentiman. The visitors will be counting on Powell and Withrow from Tarkio and Red Warnstaff and Hecker have been in training for 30 days.
• Harvey Peters, 18, wanted some bubble gum from the Rock Port Fountain machine Thursday evening of last week. But when he put his money in, the machine failed to deliver the sticky stuff. Harvey then put his index finger inside the machine to reach the gum and his finger got stuck. Chris Simon and Irish Andermann took apart the machine to get the lad’s finger free, which had been stuck for 30 minutes.
• The Atchison County Fall Fair will be held in Rock Port August 23-25. Master of Ceremonies will be Bob Blaylock of stage and screen. He will drive a car down Main Street while blindfolded and will conduct a radio quiz show on Friday.
• Rock Port’s first rooster race will be held on Main Street August 25 as part of the Fall Fair. Jockeys and roosters signed up so far include: Paul Bradney with Twinkle Toes; Tom Rash with Sunburst; Gus Minter, Sr., with Sure Thing; Bob Sawyers with Joe Louis; Barney Broton with Early Riser; James R. Amthor with Ideal; I.B. Gaines with Happy Day; Bob Bartholomew with Honey; Floyd LaHue with Heat’s On; Lloyd Bell with Sinatra; Lee Vogel with Lights Up; and Marion Kline with Do You Mind.

• Atchison County is sporting a new tax machine at the courthouse which will be a big help in figuring all the tax changes and extension of the tax books for the year. The new L-6000 Burroughs cost $13,339.
• Don Clark, Ford-Mercury car dealer in Rock Port, is opening up a new residential building area just west of Greenhill Cemetery.
• Kimosabi column: “Everyone is scared to death of sharks these days because of the movie ‘Jaws.’ There seem to be more shark sightings and more shark bitings or maybe because of the movie people are just paying more attention. One way to help prevent sharks from acting up is to keep them out of the theatre. They pick up ideas…”
• Cox’s Conglomerations column: “Back in the good old days, we used to solve our solid waste problem by digging a new hole and moving the little house. Now, we have to have 50 pages of legislation.”

• The Rock Port Garden Club picked the yard of Dale and Diana Dickkut at 405 South Water Street as the August Yard of the Month. The Dickkuts have carefully laid out the planting to add symmetry and color to highlight their home.
• Linda Farrell, employee at Rock Port’s McDonald’s, will be representing the local restaurant at the 2nd Annual Regional All-Star Competition in Kansas City, Missouri, August 12th. She is competing in the Lobby and Hospitality Event.
• The 2000 Rock Port High School fall sports practices are underway. Sixteen girls are out for volleyball, six runners are out for cross country, and 29 players are out for football.
